For those of you that don't know (it's posted elsewhere), a big tree fell on the bed of my truck during the big storm last week. Ins. adjustor today told me they were totalling it because there are no replacement beds, and the cost to replace it with new parts is not worth it. They put the value at about $6000, although I was told they use NADA which puts it at $7700. Maybe he's detracting for every little mark on the truck. Kind of silly to total the truck over a simple bed, but it is getting pretty darn old and sloppy. Interiors about worn out, steering box is loose, who knows when the tranny or something else vital might give up the ghost.
So I told him I definitely want to buy it back and fix it myself. I guess how it works is they estimate salvage value and subtract that, and give me the rest. Guess I might get $3-4k check, which will burn a hole in my pocket.
Not real worried about replacing the bed, I've done it many times. Guy said he checked their database and there are no dually beds in NH or surrounding states available to them. Good thing he didn't look under the tarp in my yard, I just bought one three weeks ago. hee hee hee):h

Speaking of burning a hole in my pocket, I just found a 95 Sub 2500 6.5 with a Fisher plow...Asking $3500. Wonder if I'd be better off fixing my truck and keeping it, fixing it and unloading it for a couple grand, buying the sub, or spending the money getting my 82 done. 82 doesn't actually need much $$-wise, just labor to put it together.

I personally think I need three 8-lug multi-passenger heavy duty old vehicles, it's my wife that can't see my reasoning. So what if I have 3 trucks that can plow snow and tow my camper? Even if I can only drive one at a time...

Might go look at the Sub this weekend: what should I look for on a 95?

And why don't I look for a cheap little commuter vehicle instead?:mad2:

Wow Dan, Sorry to hear about your loss... but, it looks like you might make out OK, eh?

You know, I do look at a cheapie commuter vehicle on occasion... it HAS to be a diesel... I've looked at the newer Jettas and such, but would rather buy American steel, but don't know quite what you could buy (I suppose you could get a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Mercedes Diesel, IF you want an MB motor and want to buy from one of the government-owned vendors)... Wait... that's not cheap... never mind.

Let us know what you decide!

-Rob :)

You can find the adjuster the parts if you want them to fix it...
The other stuff wrong with your truck is fixable after all.

Take the money, buy it back, and use it to haul off the rest of the stupid trees you have waiting to fall on your rides or on your house.

Wait to see what the buy back price is.....and don't forget, everything is a negotiation....(Book value and buy back value) you and the ins. co., have to come to an "agreed price"......They all (Ins Co.) will try to low ball you, just don't give in and they usually cave....Do not accept their first offer, nothing is written in stone.

2 Cents

If the frame is good, ever thought of a flat bed?

See if they'll put a Knapheide or similar bed on it?

I had one on my 83 gmc, 6 x 8. I'd either run 3ft sides or a 12" bulk head on the front. Its an option. Although I like the cap on my 98's bed, I do miss the flat bed.

I sold the flat bed for $1200 at auction last year.

Good luck.

Completely agree with you Dan! I think you're pretty well set. Take the check, buy the 'burb, swap the bed and you're off, probably still with some coin in the pocket. I think buyback shouldn't be more than 20% of settlement.

I think i would buy it back for the best possible price, rip off the old bed and check for any other damage. Go dig under that tarp and put the dually box on that you have. You probably would have enough money left for the burb and to have someone give that new bed a quick paint job to match!!!!!

Once I had a very clean older vehicle that my daughter totaled the 2nd time I allowed her to take the car out alone when she was 16.

The car was spotless about 12 yrs old at the time 1983 Pontiac GP that I had purchased brand new.

The insurance adjuster totaled the car because of the age, the damage was all cosmetic no frame damage. The first price they quoted me was WAY LOW.

My insurance agent recommended I go to the Dealer and other local shops to have them sign some affidavits to help the adjuster convince the main office of the vehicles condition along with recent receipts of any major repairs. Well that worked, I got way more then the original offer and I was able to buy the car back for a dollar contingent that I signed a wavier that I could never file another claim for that vehicle with that insurance company again. That was fine by me.

I had the car repaired, it turned out great almost better then new, drove it another 3 yrs until my son totaled it, he did a number on it, bend the frame it was toast after he got done. I loved that car...

So bottom line don’t just surrender & take the first offer, there is more that can be had, just have to work with them & convince them of it’s worth.

X2 Only thing to keep in mind is that if you want to try and sell the truck it would carry a salvage title i believe.

Depending on how you anticipate your wife's reaction, folding seats that are comfortable enough to sleep on might be part of your considerations...just sayin'

Have fun. I tell my wife, "girl's gotta have a hobby."

Very few members around here sell their 6.5's :)

Yea understood. I sold one of mine and then bought it back a year later. Still feel guilty haha. Only reason i made the statement was because he had listed it as an idea. Just giving a reason why it might not be a good one :D

I agree with above go with a flat bed after you purchase the truck back!

Yep, make it max width possible. My bed is over 5 1/2 feet wide, almost 6. Its fantastic. Makes looking at normal beds seem tiny and fill up fast. You can create walls with Aluminum Side boxes for the ultimate setup.

For a 95, like anything, check lift pump pressure, during operation only runs off OPS, unless the relay mod was done. Look for rusty fuel lines on the frame rail, or corroded fuel hoses in engine bay. More than likely youd be troubleshooting something within a month. Like a ground or not yet relocated PMD.

I could really care less about the salvage title, I'll be the last owner of this vehicle. I'm going to run it into the ground. Don't know how long that will be, sometimes it's frustrating replacing and repairing parts, and watching it rust and scrape away from it's original beatiful appearance. But I've got a new fender on it, two new doors to go on it and the bed I mentioned earlier. A new rear bumper and a paintjob, and I'll have a real pretty truck again. Course I'll still be replacing old worn out parts (steering box might be next) and the motor and tranny could be a killer if either one was to fail.

I've almost talked myself out of the Sub, I'm going to instead use the money to fix the wifes truck, put tires on hers and on my 82, then I'm going to hopefully finish my basement to get some more liveable space. 3 kids is making my house seem really small.

First thing I'm going to do is order the KOJO tune. I've been wanting one for many years, never able to save up enough for Bills with the high core charge.

Appreciate all the input. I will try to fight them if they lowball me. The ballpark numbers the adjuster was initially tossing around didn't sound too bad though. And it is going to cost me nothing to fix the truck, like I said I already bought a replacement bed, and was planning on changing it in the spring anyway.

I did consider a flatbed for a while, only because I had so much trouble locating a dually bed. I know flatbeds are much more useful, and fiberglass fenders seem to attract impacts, but I love how a dually bed looks.
