Isuzu have a nice midsize SUV with small diesel engine back where I came from (Indonesia):

Toyota also have a nice small 2.5L powerful diesel engine that is very efficient in a minivan that fits 7 adults + 1 or 2 kids:

We get a bunch of all these here : Isuzu D-Max, Toyota Hilux, Nissan NAVARA, and even their chinese copy (Hoover SUV or Wingle for the D-Max). I'm used to name them the dwarf clones 
But this name doesn't reflect reality. They are pretty, hard at work, comfortable.
Their 4 cylinders common rail diesel engine arealmost powerful (around average 174 HP) even though they are not really fuel savers.
e.g. the Navara is almost firsty and is needing more fuel than a 6.5 with an ATT for the same distance....

A few years back, Isuzu made a real nice little 4 cyl diesel motor that was pretty reliable. They put them in the pup trucks. A buddy of mine had a few and even used to plow snow with them. Good fuel mileage too. Too bad we can't get them here anymore.
