Not to even mess with a defunct GM ISS revision who knows what number I obtained the Borgeson aftermarket shaft. Have the thunk in the steering now. I suspect it is the original ISS as I can feel a thud in the u joint. Also have some noise when turning now and then like a bad bearing.

So how common is the lower column bearing failure? Does the upper bearing fail or something else cause noise when turning the wheel to the left?

Moved to suspension and steering.

Do you have the updated ISS already installed?

Look at the lower column bearing where the column ends and the ISS attaches- is the retainer white plastic? If so, that is where a lot of the clunk noise and feeling when turning at low speeds was occurring with mine because the bearing was falling apart.

The new one is a light green-ish and replacing that seemed to solve 95% of the steering clunk.

That answers the question. Cool they used a different color for the 'better' part. I have the white bearing. Although it is loose the ISS is also loose. Not sure if it is the newer ISS or not - but def bad. So I will add the bearing to the job.
