just a little wet

Newbie here...
I have a 6.5 TD in a 1996 P30 chassis motor home.
The only modification I have made is a homemade turbomaster at 9-10 PSI.
It is easy starting, without smoking and seems to be running normal.
The engine has no CDR valve, but has original venting tube at the rear of the engine.

One day going up a hill I suddenly heard a "poof" from the engine.
The noise was kind of metallic and I could smell oil for some seconds.
Then I stopped at the top of hill, with the engine running, and I could see this blowby.
I haven't noticed this before. Too me this seems too much blowby, but I don't know.
What do you think?

Thanks,

That does seem like a lot of blowby ... but the engine sounds healthy to me.

Did you have loss of power or anything when you heard the noise?

Can you do a compression and leak down test to check the condition of the rings and valves?

I did not feel a loss of power after the sound but I did not push it on the way home. I will do some testing. Thank you for answers.

Update after winter sleep.
The "poof" I heard was just the tdc mark bracket that I lost , hurting the belt causing the smell of oil rubber.

The engine still starts easy and sounds good but with the same overblow. No oil or bubble in water and oil is fine.
The compression test showed this:
Cyl1#300psi. Cyl3#320psi. Cyl5#280psi. Cyl7#360psi. Cyl2#390psi. Cyl4#240psi. Cyl6#260psi. Cyl8#340psi.
With some oil in cylinder , number #4 was 300psi and number #6 was 280psi.

Missing the TDC mark bracket it was difficult making a leak down test but the cylinder 2 and 7 showed 10% leak . Cylinder had a 40% leak.
It was very difficult to hear where the leak went, because of noisy background. So I dont trust the leak down test very much.

Could it be head gasket or burned top piston ring or both? Or something else.

How many miles on this? I thought good compression was 400 psi on these and your down to 240 psi on #4 and 260 on #6.

If it starts good and runs good keep running it. only other option is rebuild.
The 95 in my sig has more blowby than yours allready for over 100.000 km,still runs good and uses little oil.(416000 km total)
I didn't compression test it but it won't fire up at all when it is below -5 and sitting overnight, even with extra glow.

And I opened this thread thinking I was going to be treated to some porn. Instead I got the 6.5 weed killer.

It has 136000km/85k miles. My plans were upgrading the turbo for A-Team and intercooler, do not feel to spend that money on this engine and being a motohome it is a lot extra work changing engine.

I just replaced the engine with a Hummer take out from Ted`s . The job changing the engine took 40 hours with plenty coffe breaks. I also replaced IP and got some marin injectors while out and put a extra double fuel filter on . Aired out the fuel lines with glowplugs out and it started right up . Just need to get timing right.
Thanks to this forum and Mararet at Ted`s , I am very happy with the result.
I just hope there is room enough for the ATT I have a little more than 2 inches up to floor.View attachment 38047

so I assume you went with the factory tubocharged hummer engine, aka the centermount hummer/van spec.?

the attachment wont load for me.

glad to hear all has worked out good so far!

Could maybe raise a section to replace the GM2 turbo with A team turbo. The engine sounds very good.
