It can suck hot air out of the engine compartment. Higher intake air temps bring higher exhaust temps. The 97+ k47 with amzoil nano filter is the way I'm going.
Anyone seen this air cleaner setup before? I was just wondering if its better then the stock filter.
Better in what way? The answer would be very different depending on your definition of "better".
The short answer is yes, but that doesn't really give you any information you can use does it?
If it doubled the HP but halved the engine life, would it be better?
If it halved the HP but doubled the engine life, would it be better?
If it doubled the HP and the engine life, but made twice the noise, would it be better?
If it doubled the HP and the engine life, but cut your fuel economy in half, would it be better?
If it made absolutely no change in HP, engine life, noise or fuel economy but required no routine maintenance, would it be better?
If it made a 10% gain in HP, engine life, noise and fuel economy but required daily maintenance taking 1 hour, would it be better?
If it made absolutely no change in any type of engine performance, but 1 out of every 100 people that saw it thought it looked "cool", would it be better?
Its really hard to know if its "better" without knowing what you are trying to achieve.
Without knowing the flow & filtering characteristics of this particular filter, I cannot comment on how it may or may not affect engine performance. I can say it appears to draw warm air from the engine compartment and that is not what most would call "better". Its probably much noisier. Some may like that but I would not call that "better".
I think its really hard to beat the later round filter boxes. It doesn't look flashy or show off like polished aluminum or chrome, but it works very well. With an aftermarket filter in the stock box, its probably as good as you will ever need for most trucks. You might be able to increase one area of performance, but at the detriment of others. The round GM filter fits well, is reasonably quiet, seals great and flows more air than required for stock and even most modified engines. It has a telltale to alert you when the filter needs to be changed. If you have an older truck, you can buy a used one for $100-150 and it bolts right in. What exactly are you trying to improve on?
I'm not trying to start an argument here, but are there any statistics that back up all the air cleaner claims that we read about here?

I dont like the stock setup on my other truck because I found dirt on the turbo side of the cleaner and I had a mouse issue.
Was that a flat plate filter or the round filter?
It was the flat filter, I think they went to the round one in 98 or 99.
