I didn't notice anything in the driveway when I left but I could have missed it. My daughter said no one came by the house and she was actually busy packing for college. Her room is near the driveway so she would have heard something. Maybe it's not mine. There's a guy in the neighborhood that throws stuff on the street into people's driveways as the city doesn't use a sweeper and he's "helping".

When I came back from the ranch, I found this - a bolt that's .4" in diameter, gold anodized and broken off right at the threads. I cleaned it for photos but it had an oily dirt and a bit of coking on one side. It was lying about where my engine would be where I park.

Anyone? It looks sort of important and I really don't want to have to go looking that deep for threads remaining in a part.

looks like a starter bolt perhaps?

it looks like the new ones i've got in my toolbox for the blazer.

I'll snap some pictures of the new bolts i've got if you'd like.

I'm buying the starter bolt. She's been a bit noisy during cranking.

So, how screwed am I? I'm starting a search through the site for previous advise.

Pull your wheel off and take a good look at the starter. Lets make sure its your bolt first. If it is, pull the starter off and turn out the rest of the bolt.

The starter bolts are cheap from GM. i bought 2 and the starter bracket and paid like 9 to 10 bucks.

Make sure you've got the starter bracket and it's in place. I'd replace both starter bolts if one of them is indeed busted.

I guess I know what I'm doing this weekend...assuming I can find the parts between the GMC and Chevy dealerships in town.

The bolts usually brake because they aren't tight... so, getting the broken piece out is easier than you might think. you may be able to get it to turn out without having to drill. It is certainly worth a try. New starter bolts from dealer are pretty resonable, and yes, replace both... Make sure that the bracket in on there too....

I've had to drill out bolts broken off flush before, and there is nothing better than a set of good quality left-hand drill bits. These are IRWIN ones. I don't know what all your tool preferences are, the set I used were not Irwin ones, those were just the first that came up in google. Most of the time when drilling something out the bolt would back out before it was drilled through.

I really love this site!

Here's an update:

I ordered Starter bolts GM part # 15544950 and Starter bracket (gm calls it just "brace") Gm part # 23502557 but I didn't order the bracket bolts. Anyone know the bolt dimensions of the one missing?

As the pictures illustrate, I have only one of the bolts on the support bracket - the other must have fallen out which allowed...what, the higher compression of the engine to resist the starter and shear the long attachment bolt. Yeah, murder mystery solved as to where the bolt came from but....

I take it that when I loosen the remaining bolt and pull the starter forward it should swing free? I figure I'll clean the terminals while it's out. Any other advise?

Please, no grief on the fact that I've yet to paint the poor gal with the Parker paint. I've been obscenely busy.

I got this from the parts sticky posted by bud9899.

Parts list for adding a starter support bracket:

Qty___Part____________________....
1 = GM P/N 23502557...starter bracket
1 = M8x1.25x18mm bolt (holds bracket to block)
1 = M8x1.25 tap (if your truck's bolt hole is corroded)
1 = 8mm lock washer
2 = M10x1.5x113 bolts (if your starter bolts are broken)

Is it correct that the bracket uses TWO identical M8x1.25x18mm bolts?

Nope, One M8x1.25x18MM bolt, the 2 are the main starter bolts. Definitely use a tap in the block hole.. it is tight, but it can be done with the starter out...

people seem to forget that the bracket is bolted to the starter as well,thats what the 1/4" or the 6 mm is for, on some there is a stud with a nut instead.

2 long 10 mm,1 8mm, one 1/4" or 6 mm depending on starter.
