I was struggling to find a good spot to relocate the PMD, I didn't want it in the bumper, as it'll see so much water and mess in there... behind the grille meant I'd have to mess with all the 7mm screws to get at it WHEN it failed, so I decided on mounting it in the cubby behind the right turn signal. it's got tons of airflow , as that's where the intake pulls from, it's a simple 4 screws to get it for swapping, and it's outside the engine compartment.
what do you all think?

IMO, it is still inside the engine hood.

The heat is not going to say "Oh, it is behind the turn signal, I should not go there". LOL!!!

It will probably be okay but iirc there was a test awhile back where the whole pmd was put under water and it never missed a beat. It's enemy is vibration and heat not weather. Many members here have their pmd in their bumpers and use the trucks as snow plows and I haven't heard of them having any weather related issues with the location.

As long as you don't do off-roading, also.

If you use the Heat Transfer paste, that should act as sealant.

x2, heat is more of the enemy than water.

I have mine under the bumper and it has gone through a lot of rain and 1 heavy ice storm.
It actually keep the PMD cold.

Here's were i put the PMD on the wife's new truck,...in the intake airflow...Cover it with a chunk of styrafoam wedged between the fenderwall and intake elbow,..i have to do that yet on this one.
Been there on my own truck almost 3 years..no problems.

how do you figure it's still inside the hood? it's outside the steel that the headlights are bolted to... no access to the engine heat at all... and it's right in the intake airflow path that feeds the fenderwell for the air filter.

It's not in the engine compartment, ignore that. You'll be fine mounting it there. On my son's '95 (now wrecked and sitting in my backyard), the PMD was mounted between the driver's side battery and the headlight frame. Never missed a beat there. On my '99 it's mounted behinde the front bumper in the center. Also never missed a beat there. Most any place forward and away from the engine is better than the original location.

Here's mine, in the bumper. With a bead of silicone around the PMD base and covering the screw heads.

see. that pic shows what I'm worried about.
corrosion.
I'm not concerned that water/dirt will hurt the PMD, I'm worried about water/dirt rusting the screws and corroding the heat sink. those screws are TINY, any rust on them, and they'd seize into the sink, and ruin it. also, corrosion on the heat sink will reduce it's capacity to transfer heat.
I think behind the turn signal is a great spot, hidden and cool.
Thanks!

It sounds like you have not been introduced to the wonders that is Anti-seize! have a can in every truck, and use it on everything.

vstech, just to repete. Anywhere outside the engine compartment is great. your location is perfect.

I like to use a bead of Goop brand adhesive around the base of PMD and on top of screw heads. Put a good nice high pile of it on the screws because later you can grab it and pull it off. It will stretch like crazy and then just pop off real clean. I love the stuff.
