IP timing, cracked heads?

My question has to do with engine damage vs. timing and fuel. I would like to try the -1.94* TDCO, but my dad had a 6.2 that had cracked the heads, and said that timing had something to do with it. Can you clarify this for me? Is the -1.94* offset good? Will I do any damage to my engine? I pull a camper with my family along, will it leave me stranded, and in serious trouble with my wife?

Timing can blow head gaskets and shatter the cylinder. Even melt a hole in the pistons.

Cracked heads are from overheating, over 215, period. Not timing.

I would suggest looking up cooling system cleaning and mods. How many miles on the injectors? Over 80K, change them before you tow. There are no guarantees with any vehicle. But you sure can take the risk down.

The timing could really screw with anything if its not set correctly. The point of setting ours to -1.94 is that it is actually set there and within tolerance and the PCM acknoledges it and knows how to make it work correctly to your benefit. The beauty of electronic injection. Youre not fooling your factory computer one bit by doing it.

More advanced could cause additional heat transfer to the block, and heads due to the precombustion chamber, but with the precombustion chamber the lag in combustion is more inherent than in direct injection, so a little more advanced is good.

Ok, now that we have figured out that it is safe, what benefit is gained from the -1.94 offset? Power gains? Milage gains? I can understand you can't have your cake, and eat it, too. I am just wondering if it worth all of the trouble.

What about the magic -1.94? Why just -1.5 to -1.78? Is that easier to accomplish? Sorry, seems like you answer one qustion just to have me bring up two more.

The timing will help even without the tune, just not as much. If its free to do its always worth it. Its not something I would go pay someone an hour labor to do. Money better spent towards getting scanner software so that you can do it yourself and still have the scanner.
