I need to know how to make sure I get my IP gear installed and timed correctly.
Shop manual says to align crank and cam marks, then rotate crank and cam so the cam mark is at 12:00 position. Then line the IP gear mark to the cam gear with IP gear mark being at the 6:00 position.
My question is how do I know what stroke the engine is on? Is it on power or exhaust stroke at that point?
If its on exhaust and I line it up it would be 180 degrees out.
I am doing this on a short block, do I need to install heads and valve train before tring the IP gear?

What difference does it make? Powerstroke is a Ford

Align the cam-sprocket mark at 6 to the crank-sprocket mark at 12

Rotate the crank 360* so the cam-gear mark is at 12

Align the IP-gear at 6 to the cam-gear at 12

All aligned = all timed

Just to confirm then, you are saying the the crank and cam marks line up ONLY in the powerstroke (not Ford).
On a gasser TDC is also on exhaust.
The more I think, I am thinking the head/valve train will have to be installed inorder to confirm.

The procedure eliminates having two (count'em: 1) timing marks on the cam gear - still don't make sense to me, but I am dyslexic, whereby S designed the DB2 and DS4 for another manufacturer, not Detroit Diesel, so we get the peculiar mechanical timing sequence that fits the timing chainset configuration - that other manufacturer uses gears.....................

It does seem wierd to me, but whatever works right. I will be able to confirm tomorrow, I think the way the 6.5 is set up is the IP timing is set up to the exhaust stroke TDC. Not that its a bad thing just wierd.

OK, then the crank to cam initial timing is set the exhaust TDC?
This is the first 6.5 rebuild for me. I will try to confirm this info tomorrow when I put the head on and can see what the valves are doing.

Or, TDC for #6 - 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3 - which it would be with IP gear-mark at BDC..............

So #1 should be at top of compression stroke at Cam and Crank at 12, IP gear at 6, right?

When you say power stroke I guess you mean combustion stroke which would be after TDC (piston going down). compression being before TDC (piston going up)

In my gassers I could remove spark plug, compression stroke you could put your finger there and feel it pushing air out. I would stick a screwdriver or something in the spark plug hole and see when it got the highest and started going back down, but all that was just to know where to set the distributor with #1s distributor post pointing at #1 cylinder. Since you are looking at the timing gears then if you set them to 12, 12 and 6 its fine.

Thats called puffing the cylinder... Done it before:thumbsup:

I ahve not pulled an IP in a long time but wasn't there a dowel or the bolt spaced different so you couldn't time it 180 out ? I seem to remember than.
