Welcome to the Truck Stop. Black smoke is usually tied to a turbo issue. The vacuum gauge will be helpful if you can run it into the cab seeing that it is an intermittent problem. When it happens a quick glance at the gauge should tell you if you have lost vacuum to the actuator. If so then move the gauge back to before the solenoid to see if it is lost there too. I would also try with vacuum gauge hooked up and under the hood to flex all the vacuum lines from the pump to the actuator. Plastic connectors and brittle vacuum lines break and cause vacuum lose.

One last thing is be sure your air filter is clean, black smoke is cause by not enough air for the given amount of fuel. Good luck.

sounds like a bad ground

X2.....You replaced the the WG solenoid, but it sounds like you have sparadic power loss to the solenoid.

Same problen I had when the WG solenoid plug/wire was bad.....She would just loose contact and WG would be left in the open position untill she powered back up, closing the WG.
