Installing My New Fuel Injectors

Well I got to installing my Injectors, What a pain in the Arse!!! Here are some pics,, First off the tools,,, I bought a 30mm deep well Impact socket. Then I modified it, by cutting of about 3/8" from the end of the socket, and then cutting 2 flat spots, so my 1" wrench would fit on it. I also had to shave down 1/3 of the side wall to make the socket thinner, to sneak by the edge of the valve cover.
This job was made easier also cause I had a 3/8 to 1/2 adaptor, and a flex head 3/8 socket. All this for removing the injectors, and the 3/4 wrench for the fuel lines.

I did this with out removing the turbo,, after you take off the air cleaner assem,, turbo oil supply line, fuel line brackets, the heatshield, and the heatshield bracket, you can get to them pretty good.

Next fight you way back there, and replace them one my one,, the #'s 8 and 6 I did thru the fender, after I removed the steel liner. #'s 2 and 4 I did from the top side. The flex head ratchet along with chopping the socket down to size was cruical to getting the ones behind the Turbo, as a straight 1/2 ratchet would of made it tougher.

On the drivers side, I removed, fuel line brackets,the glow wires,, and fender liner rubber, and then took to doing the injectors, the 3rd one back, #5 needed the flats on the socket to be used as the steering shaft was real close, and the ratchet wouldn't fit. I did most of these from the top. the other three were the easiest. All in all, it was not TOO bad of a job, and I still have some skin left of the old knuckles

Started it up, in between doing the pass and dr side to check my work for least before doing the other side. Started up, and sounded fine. After the job was done, It didn't even sound like I had done any work at all. It seemed to idle fine, no extra knocking, or anything.

My test drive was up to the Speedway truck stop to top off the tank, I had just fueled 92 miles ago, and it took 6.2 gal. So that was like 15.3 MPG, I'm gonna run to town Sunday, to put 60 or so miles on it, and top it off again to see if there is any MPG increase. I sure hope so, as these were bosch Germany units I took, and I think they were the originals. Truck now has 170000 miles.

A few other shots of Fender liner removal

When taking the Fender liner out, Don't forget the little 1/4 in screw that goes to the rubber bumper filler. as seen in the first pic,, then take out the 15 or so 13mm bolts and 1 13mm nut that hold the liner in and rotate it from the front down, till it clears in the back, and remove. you can see in the one pic, all the clean spots, where the botls are.

The other 2 pics, are of the new 2.5 crossover, I did this past Monday,, and a pic of the TurboMaster installed on my GM4.

It runs great, not that it ran bad before, I did notice, that my boost was a little lower, Don't know if that was a result of the new bigger crossover or what, buy I pulled to the side of the road, reached in and turned it up a bit, and now it spikes to 15, then settles down to 12 or so, under full throttle, no load, and stays there thru the RPM range.
The truck won't smoke them from a stand still, and it throws, a little black smoke when I mash the go pedal, then it just goes!! Till my clean driving record tells me to back down ;)
 
Job well done, I must have been lucky, I never had to modify my socket. It's just a regular 30mm deep socket.

You must have a nice one with thin walls... Is yours 3/8ths? I know my 30mm deep didn't stand a chance, it was too fat and too long..

It's a Westward socket, IIRC it's only about 2 1/2" long and it's a 1/2" drive. It's not a deep impact socket though. I have a set to 1" and they are longer and thick walled.
 
I just had mine on my 93 replaced.
Still starts like crap when its not cold enough for the timing advance to come on. If it's hot or ice cold it's fine.
I haven't check the MPG yet but the motor does have more power, louder, and smother at an idle in gear.

Bosch standard injectors from Health were installed.
FYI the turbo was removed.

ISn't there a starting procedure for the mechanical pumps to engage a fast idle? SOmeone with the pedal to the floor or something?
 
Lower boost because its burning more on top of the cylinder and less in the exhaust manifold from having better atomization of the fuel from the new nozzles, higher pop pressure should help also.

Yes, you have to push on the pedal a little and release, like setting the choke on a carburetor. The high idle solenoid is not stout enough to rotate the throttle linkage, its just stout enough to hold it once there.
 
I got a 30mm at Advanced Auto for like $14. It is deep, really deeper then needed. It is 1/2" drive with a hex on top for a 3/4" wrench. Worked fine for me without any modifications.
