So I got tired of all the discussion on whether or not there is a coating on the inside of inj lines so I dissected one today to find out. What did I find? Nothing nada zip, no coating. I even bent it 90* in the vise to see if I could get anything to flake off still nothing. So there ya go.

Les,I never seen a line with coating in them, frankly if there was it would flake off allready when they bend them new at the plant.
Injector line come on the roll from the steel factory, i used to make them lines from scratch as needed back in the old country. Was way cheaper than stock.

BTW,i like your steel workbench

The flaking that everyone talks about is of the microscopic size and internal to the line. It doesn't take much to jam an injector and cause problems.

I don't remember the coating, but I remember Teflon. But I'm probably mistaken.

New lines haven't been heat soaked for hundreds of hours either.

On making your own lines,
Keep in mind that distributor pump styled injection line length differences will impact cylinder timing. (it is high discouraged)

Injection lines for a Standyne (RoosaMater) & Bosch (not unit or common rail) injection system are equal length.

Could it be a coating flaked by fuel after years of service?, a kind of varnish building itself year after year?

I heard about the same problem in auto trans, so old mechanics say it's better to change oil more often, instead of having the trans and converter flushed under pressure?

Ak, would you dissect a 4L80-E? :D

this was an old line off of a 96 higher mileage motor. And there was no varnish build up either. I'm also pretty sure the lines on the 6.2/6.5 are diff lengths and it shouldn't matter once they're full it will only move as much fuel as the IP pushes each times.
Hopefully in Feb I will be building a 4l80e and plan on lots of pics

Myth=BUSTED!

As much as I have bent my lines, 6.2 long body to reach 6.5 short body injectors and DS4 lines to reach 6.2 heads I would have had an issue with this coating. I have not had any issues. (Other than poor quality nozzles and air leaks.) Mine should have cracked if anything...

Looks good :D we have a worn 4L80-E laying around, and we never opened it: too scared of doing wrong.
I have rebuild one a year ago,no problems yet,guy put 40 K on it since.
They are not that hard to do,i just had to make some adaptors to guide the seals in the drums when installing the pistons,no other special tools needed other than some big snapring pliers.
Oh,and i fabricated a holding fixture to the engine stand to,that is must have as well, makes life much easier.

A rebuild manual is a must though

Had some new brake line flake from the inside. Not a big deal, a shot of air and done.

Glad it's a myth busted on IP lines.

The Inj lines on my current 6.2 are bent here and there.. The rare long coarse injs with the funky angle kinda lines... No problems here.

Most tubing and pipe is extruded, any flakes are probably from the process. Much like mill scale on steel.

So I stopped by the shop again and measured the inj lines and they are different lengths so another myth busted. they measured from shortest 22 1/2 to about 24".
