Alright, I've just about had enough of my Tahoe..... Last year ( IN -20C or 0F) the bushings wore out so bad the starter it would skip off the flex plate once in a while. Easy enough found a band new bosch unit for $150 spent an hour trying to take it out then found the bracket thats at the back side of it (whata pain in ass), held my tongue the right way and it popped right out without having to take anything else apart. Replaced with the new unit. Little noisy but it worked. Two months ago a starter bolt broke in the block, YAE! I'm not doing it in -20 degree weather again, sent to the a shop.

They fix it but in the meantime they manage to strip what little there was left on the off the flex plate. Fine it wasn't the greatest anyway. They replace it changing out the rear seal on the tranny ( may as well fix it while it's apart). Get it in, they lose the shims for the starter, up here the only way to get new shim is to either buy a new starter or order new ones from the states, two weeks wait and in they go.

Now the starter is cutting up the new fly wheel! JUST Great! New 250$ starter goes in, done right not. Drove it for a day command start wont let the engine shut off unless I pull the fuse, woopy! Next day starter spins but not turning the engine over. Tow it back to the shop, new threads pulled out of the block, fix them and they find that there is no bracket holding the back of the start, $18 that little thing costs. Get it back drive it a day.

Try to start the Tahoe the next day, can hear the solenoid click but not turning over, goody goody. Tow it back to the shop again, the bolt for the armature fell out somewhere, warranty YES!!!!! Finally something good for once. That is until the go too start it. turn the key to let the glow plugs cycle but the starter engages, engine fires right up and the starter stays engaged.

Would it do this because the ignition switch is burnt or what? Are these ignition switches bad for this or is it just simply wore out? That's the only conclusion I can come to. The mechanics are friends of mine and they can't see it shorting anywhere else. I was pissed the second visit to the shop, now I feel like taking it out the field and unload a few belts of .50 cal ammunition on it.

Sorry this post is a little long but I've got to get it out or what's left of that thing will be in the field. ANY and all help from you is appreciated. Thanx.

I'll have them change it out, and if it doesn't work, I'll have them change out the ignition. thanx for the help.

Sounds kind of like they messed up the wiring, and put igintion to the solendoid where Start should be. Is there an ignition wire to the solenoid and a Start wire? I havent messed with mine, but all the older starter solenoids I dealt with had both an S and an I on them, two posts, for two different reasons. But our ignition switch may have separate contacts when in start so the solenoid doesnt need that "I" terminal.

Burnt ignition switch contacts wouldnt short the On to Run to make the starter engage in the Run position, it would just lose continuity and not power the PCM to start the truck.

buddy--I don't remember for sure about my 94 6.5, been several months now since I replaced the starter, but I'm pretty sure it's the same as my 83 6.2. The 6.2 has only one wire. There are two posts and only one will work to run the starter. I just recently put the starter back in my 83 and that one I remember for sure.

When I got home I looked it up on AllData and it just has the one start wire and the battery wire.

So its odd that the starter would engage with the ignition in Run, unless someone shorted ignition power to that line.

What is "Command Start" is that a remote start thing? If so, probably messed up the wiring with that or that is and maybe has been a problem for a while.

Command start is remote starter, I do have that and I am going to disconnect it right now. It was brought to my attention that even though I pulled the fuse for it, it could still complete the circuit.
