1993 3500 extended cab 454 with a 5 speed. Can I use all of the parts to convert my auto to a 5 speed? I have a 1989 6.2 with a turbo 400, and I have been going through transmissions every 3 years or so. I would like to convert it over, and I remember that 454 were externally balanced so I think I would need a flywheel. What all is involved in changing over to manual trans?

My friend was picking up a 1969 Plymouth GTX, and the guy that owned the property said, "do you know anyone that wants that truck?" I walked over to look at it, and when I saw the stick shift I said I'll take it. He said it runs good but some cranksters took the battery, and he had problems going through starters.
 
I would say get a 6.2L specific flywheel and clutch, and then use everything else from the 93. 93 is a good year, as it has the low 1st and reverse.

He'd have to get a 6.2 specific flywheel. The ring gear/starter drive gear count is different than a gasser. Also the 6.2/6.5 is externally balanced(flywheel has sa weight on it that's 180* apart from the weight on the crank balancer). I know the 350 is internally balanced, not sure on the 454 though.

As far as the clutch, i had a "gasser" clutch in my K-5. Never had any issues with it, but this time around now that the engine is turbo'd i went with a 6.2 specific clutch.
 
454 is externally balanced. No doubt different than a 6.2 or 6.5.

My transmission guy told me to install a trans cooler years ago. I never did, and I tow a car trailer with that truck. I know it's my fault, also I never get around to changing the fluid. I torture these transmissions so it's no doubt they fall apart. The truck keeps going with around 400,000 miles. I was going to install a 4L80E but the electronics were about $1200 alone
 
You did not specify(unless I missed it) 2wd or 4wd. If it's a 4x4 the gasser tranny "should" have a damper put on it as the gasser will not have it. Some say you don't need it....IDK, I have it on mine. The damper is bucks...Use a SMF. As far as which one, Bill H and I banged our heads together trying to figure out if there was indeed any difference between a 6.2 flywheel and 6.5 SMF. They are 2 different part #s but Peninsular told me I could use either. I forget what the difference was but it was minor. I would not use a dual mass.
 
BTW, I question the tranny builder or the parts he is using. I beat the ever living balls off my CUCV this winter plowing with snow like CT has never seen with a 9ft plow and 35's with chians on them pushing 3ft of snow uphill and my tranny is fine. In fact the only weak point of a TH400 is the TCC and it's pretty strong but the weakest link in it. Did he check the case support ? It could be worn.
Funny though because i am going to swap my Th400 out for a NV4500 as well but not because of that. Just the cheapest way to get overdrive and I hate electronics so I can see your desire...
 
The builder could build me a trans with kevlar, and all of the expensive parts but I'm too cheap. I had turbo 400s in 454 El Caminos and Chevelles when I was a kid... they never broke. When I tow my trailer it gets abused by steep hills, and I have even been on hills so steep that the 6.2 diesel wouldn't pull it up, and I had to back down. The turbo 400s I use are the factory heavy duty type with the fixed yoke and deep pan. My old transmission guy put a 3 lug torque converter in, and I tore one of the lugs loose, so I switched builders now they hold up better. I have to admit that the last trans came out of my brother-in-laws old 6.2 mileage unknown, and that trans had sat out in the weather for a few years.

Both trucks are 2 wheel drive, it probably doesn't have a damper. I'll be parting out the 3500, so I will have some cash to spend on parts for the conversion. Anyone have a photo of this damper they can share?
 
I'm not sure about the 2wd. I think it's external..
3 Bolt TCC...that is part of the problem. The 6 bolt ones had seemed to always hold up better for me. I could not tell you if there are any differences in the internals.
