OK, I've had GM 5.7's and MB 5's and 6's and a chevy 92 6.2 n/a... but never dealt with the 5.6 or the turbo before.
The truck has several mods on it, wiring wise. OPS relocate, PMD relocate, etc.

I've pulled the questionable IP and am in the process of installing a tested good one.

while I have the turbo off, I'm swapping all the injectors on that side, and all the fuel hoses, also changing all the plastic rocker nubs...

I think I'll do a compression test as well.

my balancer is showing signs of cracking, so it'll be on my list, but I'll not change it just yet.

any heat shields under the injectors? or just pop them in?

Hmm. different eh? I'll put the IP's next to each other, and compare.
there were fuel issues, and somebody installed an unknown IP on the truck, and could not get it running, they took the original IP and had it flow and cleaned at the injector shop, but did not put it back on. I was getting sporatic issues, and could not nail down the non start problem, and I had the IP in a bag, so I decided to install it. and do all the other things needed since it was torn down.
thanks!
I did see your group buy thread, but 400+ is out of my range of spending at the moment.
perhaps once I get the truck moving under it's own power, and get a few paychecks under my belt I'll investigate the fluidamper. I have one on my sbc race motor, as well as my BBC race motor in prep stages... so I am familiar with them, and will likely get one in the future.

Welcome to the site, vstech!

Take a few minutes, fill out your signature (click on the link in mine). It'll help us all know your truck and stop a lot of dumb questions from us. A few pictures and an avatar are always nice touches, too!

Then go grab the 6.5 Troubleshooting checklist (there's a link to THAT in my signature, too ... handy things, signatures!) and go through it, checking/answering each point. It's called a troubleshooting checklist, but it's also a darn fine maintenance checklist, and if the truck is new to you, you'll want to see about those items.

Sounds like this isn't your first rodeo, though, so have at 'er, keep us posted, and ask for help if you need any. This place is just full of the best 6.5 guys around!

Jim

PS - Oh yeah, your IP question. It isn't just the year ('94) that you need to watch for, it's also the model number of the IP (found on the green tag on the top)

If the one that came off was a 5068, then either you have to replace it with a 5068 OR you can replace it with a 5521, but you'll need to change out the chip in the computer.

The only year that had the HD IP (5068) was 1994, but not all 1994s had that IP... it's a strange thing. The chips needed for the 5068 are not compatible with the chips needed for the 5521, and vice-versa. Same problem in future years, with OBD-II computers... can't put a 5068 in them without some serious playing around.

Thanks for the info on the IP! I'll be sure to take pics of each, and I HOPE they are correct for the truck!

The IP that did not run that I took out of the truck was a 5521 VIP that came out of the truck is a 5459

here are pictures of the blue plate on the IP's
this was on the truck, and would not run. pulled from a blown engine and installed on my truck.

this one was pulled from the truck supposedly, and was cleaned and tested.

Never heard of a 5459 but I assume it's just an upgrade to the 5521. Likely a wrong pump issue, might start with a chip that works on one of those pumps. My 94 ran like crap when the high output 5068 got swapped for a 5067. Barely started and sputtered when running

I found this in an IP faq...

DS4831-5459 12561405 1999 LD & HD C/K, G, and P3 Truck & Van * DS4831-5521 Note 14

Just read your signature and saw it is an ld 2500 and I would be surprised if it had a HO pump. Still might wanna figure out for sure.

so, the 5049 is an HO pump? more power, so it's desired? but if the truck did not come with it, the only way to use it is to get a computer that was with that pump.

it looks like my pump should work on the truck as is. WHIEW!

only the 5068 pump requires a diff PCM. they all put out the same amount of max fuel the 5068 puts out more fuel earlier.

... OK, I've replaced the injectors on the turbo side, and installed new USA GP's I installed all new rocker buttons (stupid stupid stupid design...) put the valve covers back on, and set the IP in place, torqued it to the timing gear... (why are there two alignment holes in the gear? only one will line up with the pump... Do some pumps have two pins?)
anyway, I'm installing the new injector return hose, and wonder if MB braided hose will do?
the OE stuff is CRAZY expensive from the dealer, and none of those clamps came off easily. I'm worried about a leak under the turbo from the heat...

I think MB is larger dia. You can get clear hose for chainsaws at a small engine shop.

ok, the chainsaw clear hose is acceptable for the return lines? under the turbo? I don't think scrimping under that massive turbo is wise, but I GOTTA get my truck running today/tomorrow...
