Is there a special tool needed to remove the clutch off a ac compressor. Living in AK I don't mess with them much. I want to mount the ac clutch on my hydraulic pump for my snowplow and mount it in place of the ac pump. At first glance I thought it was similar to powersteering pump but my puller isn't even close to the right diameter.

Yes it looks like a bolt that threads into the hub and that is drilled and tapped and another bolt but with a bearing on the end. The compressor shaft is tapered with a key way. Snap On sells a tool set that has a set that fits different hubs. Most auto parts stores can get the pullers from which ever A/C parts line it carries.

I bought the puller-installer set at napa a few years ago. Here's a couple pics.
The one with the point on it is the puller. It threads into the clutch and pushes the clutch off the shaft. The installer threads into the clutch and threads onto the shaft of the compressor to pull the clutch back on. There may be a nut on the end of the compressor shaft that will need to be removed to remove clutch. If you need to replace the idler bearing in the clutch the part# is BCA/National #907257 Bore1.5743 OD 2.4411 Width.812 The bearing is held in by center punch dings ,so it will drive out rather hard.

Just buy a new AC clutch if it will work and fit the hyd pump. You need the tool to both remove and install the clutch. This is why the compressor shaft is threaded - to pull the clutch on or adjust it if it lasts long enough to wear and starts to slip. (if you catch the slip before it ruins everything.)

So the tool on the right in the first picture is for installing? My hydraulic pump used a bolt to hold on the clutch but other than that everything looks the same.

I don't usually like to try to talk people into things when they're just asking how to do something (not looking for opinions) but are you sure you want to get rid of the A/C pump? I understand you're in Alaska, so the cool air doesn't concern you much, but the defrost will work so much better when it runs through the pump because of the dry air.

Didn't work anyway and it's just going to be a plow truck. But ya I hear you.

:rolleyes5: You do know it HAS to be over 32 degrees F for AC to work as intended... Otherwise the evaporator becomes an ice chunk and restricts airflow.

:D As cold as it likely is up there I couldn't resist.

winters are pretty dry humidity wise up here so I never use the ac to dry things out. I do know a few people who use it when it is high humidity

By the way does anyone have a diff compressor they could check the dimensions of the clutch on for me? The one i tried was the older flat round (looks like a cheese block). It was really close to fitting on my hydraulic pump but no cigar. Needs to have a serp belt pulley on it though.
