I think I have a good place to get fuel so assuming good fuel, how long should my fuel filter last? I'm not using BioD, nearest Bio is hundred miles away.
Could get a bad load of fuel at any time, this is why I equipped my rig with a vacuum switch to let me know when it NEEDS changing, plus addding a 10 micron Racor filter before the lift pump allows it to "sift" the large chunks >10 micron from the on engine 5 micron nominal filter which as a single filter is having to filter all fuel in a smaller body filter , plus the prefilter protects the rubber elements in the lift pump from large particulate like rust flakes & other solids from bottoms of fuel tanks to keep it alive longer.
15K miles is sort of a guide not an absolute, before I went to extra/better filtration I've had filters go "bad" within 5K miles, bottom line carry a spare always, when you power drops off if you aren't gauged to monitor fuel supply to the IP swap filter out.
I do every 3rd oil change and carry one with me at all times. So MY vote is 9-10K miles.
My Dmax has 9K on its filter and I can no longer go over 90 without a low fuel pressure code being thrown. Who woulda guessed that would be my indicator?
I learned I had a "bad filter" once when the old girl ran to my camp capable of 80+ mph then I hooked up to my empty GN trailer 5600# and barely capable of making 40 mph up a grade what happens with a all in one filter it catches big & small all on the same element.
Blockage is blockage to the engine/Ip be it 5 micron or 10, so with the Racor 10 micron as a pre filter which is a large filter capable of carrying a large amount of crud and bulk of what you get in the fuel system anyway it extends the life of the on engine filter.
Which is now only having to deal with the <10 micron stuff, and not much of that generally entrained in the fuel vs. having to deal with all of it.
