i had mine rebuilt

$995 in and out on a 4X4 plus hard parts like gears, bearings and electronics. Clutches, seals, and bands included.
Allstate Transmissions in Phoenix.

I pulled the tranny myself and brought it to the shop was quoted 800-$1000 for a full rebuild

Cost $1000 because my od drum was fried, bought a billet piston converter from Transtar for $275 us core, transgo hd2 reprogramming kit for $120 installed by tranny shop, new Hayden fluid cooler and new lines for about $100 and I also decided on new converter to flex plate bolts from arp for $22

I just did a Th400 for my nephew, which shares many parts and design with the 4Le80. Master kit was $200 and did not need any hard parts or converter.

I just got mine back together, did the internal dual feed, and added one more clutch and steel to the directs.

i didnt have time to do it so they did the R&R.. didnt need any hard parts but i was an a** and ordered all the electronics from gm i mean all sol, pressure sensors wirimg harness gov motor and a dayco converter..1400.00
I have been burned by the el cheapo eletronics from a tranny supplier china junk..

They're of similar origins...but with no disrespect intended, implying a TH400 and 4L80E are alike is kind of misleading. Just like a TH350 and the 700R4/4L60/4L60E series have their similarities, the OD transmissions are far more complex and expensive to build. Most shops can knock out a TH350 or TH400 build for a couple hundred bucks, but once you get into the OD transmissions, you're usually hovering around a minimum of a grand, regardless of whether it's the light duty 4L60 family or the heavy duty 4L80E.

Stock is 5 clutches in the direct drum, and forward drum. They can hold 6 by removing the wave plate, and using different thickness steels. I have only 5 now with the turbo 400 direct drum. Some people machine the pistons, and top plate for more clutches also.
