How does the CDR fail, and can cleaning it give me extra time?

Not quite sure how this simple device fails, but I routinely hear it only lasts so long(how long?). I've also heard you can clean it, but not sure how.

I've noticed new oil weeps in my engine, no big leaks tho. I think my CDR is still working fine because I see oil residue in the intake after the air filter, as well as some oil on my turbo intake.

So how long do these usually last, how do they fail, and how do I know when they fail, and how can I clean it to make it last longer?

Thanks
