How do you diagnose a temperature gauge?

How do you diagnose a temperature gauge?

It goes up 1/4 of the way.

Could be on thermostat, but I am guessing something electrical.

I would think this would be fairly universal for electric gauges.

Step 1. Ground gauge wire.

Most gauges work off from a ground where if you take the one wire lead on the sender and ground it with the ignigion in the run position, it should peg out ether at 0 or at max depending on how the gauge is setup. if the sender has two wires, simply jump the two together and see if it maxes out. also use a ray temp gun to verify accuracy at the sender.
