hey guys im a neighbor of justins here, hes having a rough time lately and with work has no time to fix his truck so i offered to help!

problem- in early September his truck began smoking a little more than normal at start up, this continued for a few weeks, more white smoke weekly, to the point where it had hard starting issues. it then came to the point where it just constantly smokes white. there is a miss fire code for 3 cylinders and a 26 or 62 code as well. we first had thought injectors tho keep in mind this engine has less than 40k miles on it, so after a fresh oil change and letting the water drain out of the fuel(excuse my lack of knowledge of the terms here lol new to the diesel world) and a set of brand new injectors and lines it still does the same thing? so we pulled the valve cover and intake ect to see if it was in the top end and the top end seems to been correct??? hes been around these engines for years and is stumped himself.

open to any ideas for help and where to go from here! thanks alot guys! -jake

Who'd he get the engine from? White smoke is almost always a dead giveaway of coolant burning during the combustion event. If the misfire is on #3, and since we don't have cooled EGR on these engines its either a cracked block or a head gasket... :(

White smokes yes? Can you do a video? Was there any oil in the coolant? How about coolant in the oil?

internation diesel reman. he said absolutley no blow by! and the white smoke smells like fuel. he bought another truck that had this motor in it with paper work, no oil in the coolant and no coolant in the oil!? but the oil smelled terrible of fuel even wen the oil was cooled to room temp. i guess we can put her back together and get you guys a video

Interesting...

Given all that, maybe the injection pump is taking a dump? Could be injecting fuel to late... white smoke can also be unburnt raw fuel due to not enough heat come to think of it, especially given the smoke smelling like fuel.

Or, perhaps a valvetrain problem on cly #3? perhaps there's heavy carbon deposit buildup on the exhaust valve keeping it slightly open. Does this engine spend alot of time idleing? Does Justin... "clean it out" every now and then? IE- pedal to the floor from a stoplight once in a blue moon to burn the soot off?

he told me the IP would be his last thought. hes replaced 3 in his life time and has never seen a problem like this. well it came up 3 cylinders were mis firing not just cylinder 3 sorry for the confusion, and id say hes drives it at WOT about once a week at least.

Alright well 3 cylinders misfiring definitely changes things. What are the chances those 3 cylinders are on the same bank? (IE-2, 4, 6).

What did the old injectors look like when ya'll pulled them out? Any physical damage? Pintles all the look the same? Nozzles aren't cracked at all?

Is this his blue truck with all the chicken lights? What year? Engines spec wise is this engine mechanical injection or Electronic?

List and describe any other factors which are not addressed in this checklist. We can’t see, hear, smell, or touch your truck, so the more descriptive information you can give, the more likely it is that somebody can assist you.

does this sound like a injector/IP? or diesel line? idles very rough, the motor "rocks" back and forth, white smoke goes away some when worm, but always still there. On the IP, witch is the return line? any ideas? Or anyone want to buy a truck?

this is his original post on the problem. when he gets off work today we're going to run the codes again to see which cylinders are misfiring. and yes it's his 1994 cclb dually with all the chicken lights.

Did this start after a fuel up?

Was wondering that last night. Bad batch of fuel with to much water / contaminants / very low cetane rating could also cause this.

You guys said you drained the water out of the fuel. How much water did you drain out? How did you go about draining out the water?

Open the drain valve and let the LP pump out a couple gallon in a pail, let sit overnight and check for water in the bottom.A pail or can with a bottom valve or plug would be best
Its pretty tough to get the water out of the tank cause you can never get to the very bottom were the water is without dropping the tank.
The GM bean counters figured providing a drainplug would take to much profit outa them.:rolleyes5:

Thieves would have LOVED it if drains had been there. That's the main reason for tanks not having them I believe.
Well jeez, they didn't need to make a 2" bung hole, just to drain the water a 1/8" plug would've been fine...would take all night to steal a gallon fuel.

BTW,what would GM care if your fuel got stole.:rolleyes5:

They would care if they couldn't sell anything with that tank. There's also the vandalism aspect.
You live in BFE. Shit happens just for the hell of it in town. You wouldn't understand:nonod:

Just for the sake of argument;)

These tanks came without drain plugs allready in the times when fuel was still cheap.:agreed:
Its no protection against vandalisme either cause a hammer and awl makes a hole faster than trying to loosen a plug with a "something" wrench.:agreed:
I f you wanna steal fuel its easier to drive to a farmyard and load up than to crawl in the middle of town under a truck with a pail, either way the thief is in for deep shit if the owner shows up:agreed:

Now what does BFE stands for :???:
