Hey fellers I need some help here figureing out what is wrong with my old 91 Z71 here is the back story.

We just had a month of ruff weather and the 91 just sat in the driveway while I drove my girl to work in the D-Max. Yesterday I go start it to move it and do some work on it, I let the truck sit idle for about 20 minutes, then I get in it and start backing slowly up the drive way which is still a bit icey I'm near the top of the drive way and the truck just stopped and made a loud bam, I thought I backed into something but noone was there. I put it in gear and drive back down thte driveway to check things out but the truck will not track straight it is dog legging hard and just dragging the passenger rear tire. I look around and see there is nothing broke or hanging off the truckso this time I turn around and go up the driveway forward, and it stops again same thing. On the third time it climbs right out ans seems fine, as I start slowly getting up to speed there is alot driveline noise but seems to be doing okay I am just thinking maybe the front end is half stuck engaged or something.

About a 1/4 mile up the road BAM CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK the truck drags to a hault and is rattling grinding and clunking like the drive shaft fell on the ground, I get out all looks good. At this point I am sick of dealing with it and say screw it, I get in and go like hell the truck doesn't slip or have issues minus some very bad sounds. I make it to my dads pull it in the shop and smell gear oil real bad, the front of the diff by the pinion is smoking pretty good. Later I go to take it out of the shop to make room for another truck and the truck makes it 5 feet backward and passenger rear tire is locked again I put it in 4 low and just force it back out of the way.

This morning I pulled the cover only to see the gears look to be fine dandy no chunks missing none laying around cross bolt is in place, so I pull the drum off the passenger side and only to see the brakes seem to look fine, the only issue being a freshly broken parking brake cable but the shoes are being held away from the drum it seems.

So I need opinions here what is going on with this thing??? The diff was smoking so I know it was getting either worked hard or hurt. The brakes seem fine but the parking brake cable is broke is that what is letting it bind somhow??? I am not suere if it is a G80 truck or not as you can't read the codes in the glove box, all I know is it is a 10 bolt GU6 (3.42). You guys never let me down so lets see what you got

Me and dad just checked some more stuff out, I lfet one tire on the ground and jacked the other up. With the truck in neutral I started turning the tire off the ground and dad saw the pinion yoke moveing in and out with a bunch of crap falling out of it.

So my new question can I knock the u-joint out and take yoke nut off and gett to the bearings?? Or do I need to pull the entire center section out??? I do not feel like pulling the center section and will most likely have amechanic do that as I don't really feel confident setting up a 10 bolt.

You can pull the nut and yoke off, but if you splattered the bearing the entire rear should be pulled apart and looked at. I would bet the race is toast and will have to be replaced with the bearing at the least.

I agree with Bill. You've probably had some collateral damage. Alternately you could pick up a complete unit at the boneyard.

The boneyard wants 350 bucks for a used 3.42 unit non G80, I just have a hard time spending that much on POS 10 bolt, I'm trying to find a FF 14 bolt 3.42.

I would pull the chuck and measure the depth of the pinion. Slap two new bearings and races with a new crush collar on it reset the depth and give it a whirl. That's as long as you can isolate it to only the pinion bearings.
