Been looking around here and the other place and cant find it....the name of that OBD1 tuning program from sweden that plugs into the ALDL and reads what the ECM is seeing in real time. As I recall it was around the $300.00 range or so.

Thinking instead of replacing all of my problematic gauges I'd just do one of these since I've typically got the laptop with me anyway.

Maybe there's something better by now?

Other suggestions?

In the meantime, I'll keep searching. Thanks....

Edit: Mods can delete if they wish...............I found it, GMTDScan

Thanks gents, I downloaded the "basic" version last night, although I do not have the cable yet.

Anyone have any experience with the cables? any advantage with engh's cable verus the one available local for about $30.00 less?

I just want to check out the basic program, and resolve any connectivity problems etc, before getting the license for the full gig.

I like what I see, I could clean up my dash, and just have the one EGT gauge to monitor, along with the laptop.

I don't think there is anything special in the cable, it is very well built though with the correct interface.

You can probably source the cable here but make sure you get the ALDL OBD-I cable with 12 pins (IIRC). I am not sure if it is a special cable for GM though. There are not too many of those around since they don't make OBD-I cars/trucks anymore.

looking at a laptop while driving can be distracting, I do it a lot with GMTDScan. I like having info fast so the gauges are ideal and dont take up space and need some way to secure the laptop. If you put a screen in/on the dash or something then I guess it could be convenient enough. I also like being able to confirm that both the gauge and PCM sensor agree for troubleshooting or simple verification of accuracy.

Any OBD1 ALDL to USB cable should work for you. You end up getting a package discount when buying the cable and software from Engh, so that kind of makes up for the more expensive cable. The one from Engh is pretty long, two pieces connected with a RJ45 connector at a switch box in the middle that I think is used for other types of vehicles.

It's a matter of preference for me to buy from the originator of a product, in this case Stefan @ Engh, as he took the time to develop a product for the 6.5 community that did not exist before hand. Yes you can find less expensive versions, but were it not for innovators going out of their way to create a product where would we be. I would throw the $30 Stefan's way myself, he's not making a living off them as it is, think about it how many OBD-Is are still out there running, and no new ones being built ?

I ordered the program on CD.That way if the computer crashes or dies I still have it. Took less than a week to get it. Having the comport of the software and computer both matched was the only problem I've had. I don't know didley about computers. Lots of owners here to help and stefan will too.

You don't need to order on CD , you can down.load it and burn to CD. It's a great program, works awesome and as TD pointed out best to buy from originator rather than a clone. My only gripe withit was if you are not computer savvy about reconfiguring Com ports it can be a small PIA to install but the issues have been cvered in threads here by myself as well as others. ONce up and running though it really CANNOT be beat for OBD1. I wish he would make a program for the OBD2 crowd...Hint hint....

You need a driver so the obd software can communicate with the computer COM port assignment of the USB port. It is actually the same for this type of software. They are auto assign by the computer so you have to find the menu item that shows that port assignment.
