Gus brought his '95 'Burb up from Mexico and I offered to set his TDCO using GMTD Scan Tech. The Mexicans had set it by ear and got it at -0.62. We got greedy and tried to get -1.50, but now all we get on the GMTD Scan Tech is 2.02 and DTC 88 "TDCO Error". We've cleared DTC History using the Scan Tech. No Good. Cleared DTC using a paper clip, still ends up at 2.02 no matter where we move the pump.

What are we doing wrong?

Engine temp = 185. New IP. Timings 8.6 and 8.6. Keep clearing codes and they reappear. Clear it with the software and with the paper clip.

What should the IP settings be?

Not sure about the numbers, BigT - never used the tool you're using. I meant physical settings range... start at straight up, if you get too far turned to one side or the other, IP timing will default and you can't get good readings until you're back within physical parameters.

That's the way it was explained to me; I'm certainly no expert at setting timing.

Agreed with 100%. From experience You have to get the pump with in the 1.94 to -1.96 in order for it to clear the codes. If you cant keep them cleared you dont have the pump in the range yet. Kepp pluggin away you'll get it.

I just talked to Big T, sounds like they are getting on correct path, they were at -.62 TDCO when they started, then too far on IP >-2.02 TDCO and it stuck there with code, now at 1.85 with 3.4-ish deg on base timing in time set.

Told them to shut down and adjust IP ti driver side and shoot for 3.6-3.7 timing in time set, then go for TDCO learn and see what happens from there.

Got them hooked up with Nvmtnlion also who helped Stefan debug the program they are using for doing the time set, TDCO set.

Sunshine patrol rides again even if just via the phone lines :)

Yeah, just finished lunch. We were able to finally set it at -1.23 and that took a major umph to the right. He had two scribe marks on the pump housing and he came in with it to the right of one of them, just forgetting to note that it was the right most one. I can see how the Mexicans set it at -0.62 as there's like a wall there on his pump movement. To go beyond that I really had to pull on my pump moving tool then lock the top nut.

I have the purpose built/bent box wrench, but it was still proving to be a major PITA to access the lower left nut. This was due to the metal return line being in the way. I eventually shoved that out or bent it out of the way and we got everything cinched up.

Took a bit longer than the 15 minutes I expected, but then I'm rusty. Some nervous moments that I might have screwed up a good thing, one of those no good deeds go unpunished things. But all is good and Gus is back on his way to San Diego, then ultimately home in Barra de Vavidad, Mexico.

Three 6.5 TD Suburbans in Fullerton, CA (Steve "Big T" lef, Gus "gnel" right, Coventry and Webley front and center), my blue '99 to left, Gus' sand '95 center, Colbythekid's white/black '95 to the right:

My wife has not figured out how to use the camera I bought her. It's an Olympus Optio water proof point and shoot, but she never bothers to read instructions. This is about the biggest I can resize it to without getting too fuzzy.

Is there a sticky on how to? besides chain wear, How does the timing get out of whack? looks pretty solid

Great Job Big T......

And the 2 NICE Pooches to boot!.......Border Collie's? (sp)

No, they're English Springer Spaniels.

BTW shortly I will be interviewing for a position in NY. Position will be based in NYC, but it will be 90% travel. I do not plan to put permanent roots down out there, nor do I plan to sell my places here in Fullerton or up in Big Bear. We'll see how it plays out.

Once again THANK YOU Big T. She ran perfect at 70mph all the way to San Diego. No Codes! It was a pleasure meeting you and yours. Friday the 4 inch exhaust:thumbsup:. gus
