SO I finally found some one to swap my 6.5 for $1100 if all he had to do was the swap and not worry about any thing els
Well I was driving it home and found that the down pipe to exhaust gasket was leaking (and setting the carpet on fire)
now the hard parts:
1) I have to drive my daughter and a lot of her stuff 750KM to Univercity tomorow
2) the bolts at not recognizable any more
3) the one corner of the steal plate is rotted away
4) I do have a new Diamond back 4 inch but I cant get it on in time

So can I use a coupler to conect the pipes if I cut the plate off?
if so what size if the pipe there?? 3"??

Thanks for some help
PS I also had to swap the glow plug controller was that was not working when I picked it up

Its at the Flange but on the Suburban the Cat is around 2 feet farther up stream
mykl2

sounds like a temporary heat shield is your friend. maybe some heat reflective wrap, or something. I doubt anything can be fixed by morning.

I still cant identify where that is. Anyway looks like you could do like Simon says;)
Maybe get some of the split tin duct work at Lowes/Home depot and hold it on there with some hose clamps.

It's the 4 bolt downpipe flange to the exh. pipe, in factory config.

Thats what I thought, but that go's into the kitty then muff right? or do I have it assbackwards?
Michael threw me with "Its at the Flange but on the Suburban the Cat is around 2 feet farther up stream"

Get some exhuat repair tape and wrap it around it for now. As long as you can shield enogh to not set the truck on fire, you won't hurt anything to drive it. 1100$ to swap the motor with no parts ? Damn, I'm in the wrong racket. Hope you got vasoline with that.

Guess i need to charge more? :hihi: I usually charge $5-600 to swap over an engine, that is if the replacement is drop in ready. If not that price goes up to about 8-900. Last 6.5TD headgasket job i did start to finish was $1200 in labor, and that beat every shop around by a lot.

As far as your picture, the gasket blew out and it looks like the flange is starting to rot away at the edges.

You can just cut that flange right off and stuff some 3" pipe in it's place. It won't be a tight fit and will leak, but the leak won't be blasting your floorboards either.

Mike, if you have access to a welder, it looks like you can see it good enough to just weld that flange (and the gap) shut all the way around. It's only there so you can unbolt the system, which you don't need, anyway.

I'd just get a piece of tin and wrap it around then take a couple of wire coat hangers and using vice grips twist it on.

I cut an empty can of black beans from last nights Black Bean Salad. I had to cut slots in it to go around the flange wrapped it in some exhaust tape and 2 clamps.
That stopped around 80% of the problem...
The other problem I had was I started it up in the morning to take it to work to fix the exhaust and it started revving to 3000 RPM and blowing black smoke like crazy.. So I got in the Jetta and picked up the Heath PMD and installed it. That problem solved... I have to tow my trailer next weekend so this week I will have to get the exhaust fixed or get the 4" one I have shed installed and free up the air inlet from the fender.
But I did make is 1600KM there and back so thanks for the help
PS the reason I did not cut the flange off was I was afraid the 3"ID piece I had would not work and then I would be SOL
Thanks again
