Harmonic Balancer - oil leak and damage from total failure?

Well my replacement 1993 6.5 appears to have a new, or at least in good shape, harmonic balancer on it from the PO's.

I am leaning toward new because there is a dripping oil leak from the front of the pan and dents and rub marks consistent with a outer ring of a loose balancer wheel hitting.

I am curious if anyone else has had damage and an oil leak from the wheel separating even after replacing the harmonic balancer? Has the failure cracked the timing cover? Ruined the oil pan seal to timing cover?

The oil is dripping from the front of the oil pan where the timing cover and oil pan meet. Possible the leak is higher up.

Truck sat a long time so all oil is dusty and leaks are showing up as wet dust/drips...

Ideas and places to look for this oil leak are welcome as I don't want to reinvent the wheel looking for it...

could the front main seal be bad? Perhaps if it was replaced when the balancer was it wasn't done correctly or it was damaged when it was being installed?

CDR working correctly?

This hole is from a 2 :eek:piece crankshaft

The PO probably didn't replace the seal or botched the seal installing the new balancer. It's easy enough to do, done it myself. I would wash the crap out of it and then try again to find it. Highest point is where it will be.

Washing her today... (Um... blasting it off with a pressure washer...)

When I rebuilt my engine it was just as caked with oil as yours bk. My balancer was showing a few small cracks in the rubber, but I think my seal just went. When I took it all apart there was a little ridge on the crank, old age.
