two problems guys, first, if I let the truck sit for two-three days it will not start without the aid of little squirt of ether. I don't like doing this. My first thought was glow plugs, but if I drove the truck the night before, no matter how cold it is the next morning, it still starts right up. Is there a chance that the fuel is bleeding back to tank or something like that? Any ideas will be appreciated. Second, the truck has an automatic transmission w/ a column shifter. The last couple of days, the damn shifter will not move unless I fool with it for a minute or so pressing the brake pedal as hard as I can. But after it goes into gear, it's fine for a while. This is my first automatic in 15 years, so I'm not familier with how the shifter works in the column.

Have you done the lift pump test? Ether is a huge no-no on a 6.5 without disabling the glow plugs. It can cause MAJOR engine damage. That's why there is warning stickers on the visor and air cleaner.
There is a safety interlock between the brake pedal and shifter. It won't allow shifting out of park without depressing the brake pedal. The interlock can be disabled by disconnecting the linkage rod from the brake pedal.

I have done the lift pump test a couple months ago, I've only owned this truck for 3-4 months. It was fine then, but who knows now. I had not thought to do it when the truck wouldn't start. I know ether is bad but if you have to got to work and can't get it started, you have no choice. I wait until the glow plugs completely cycle, before squirting the ether. If I were to install a gauge in line, what pressure would the LP put out to make sure it is ok? Thanks for the info on the shifter, it's coming out today.

The next time you go to start the truck, try this, Place the shifter in D and turn the key switch to the start position for 3-4 seconds.
Place the shifter back in park.

This should power the lif pump without cranking the engine.

Now do a full glow cycle and try a start up.

You should be able to hear the lift pump Purring away while the key is in the start position.

Keep us posted

I fixed the shifter problem by unhooking the cable to the brake pedal, thanks for the advice on that. As far as the starting issue, I checked the glow plugs on the drivers side and checked the block heater chord.
The glow plugs are all good, checked for voltage to the glow plugs, all was fine. The chord is toast, I need to get a new one. I was going to go to the passenger side to check the glow plugs on that side, but the truck has snow packed up underneath right now, I'm in NE Ohio, and we got close to 6+ inches today. Does anyone have a good set of instructions to get the glow plugs out on the passenger side?

I saw in another post about putting clear tubing on the return line to insure it's staying full of fuel. Does anyone have a diagram or picture showing where to run this tubing and what size I need to buy

Thanks for your help
