Hi all.

We have a truck experiencing very hard to no start at cold.

First thing we will test this evening, when we'll see the truck, will be glow plugs and relay of course.

But, I was wondering what could cause that, other than glow plugs and relay.

I think:
  • CTS
  • optical filter sensor if any

any other thought ?

This truck has a new PMD relocated behind the grille by a mechanic. They called me after PMD swap, because it was still experiencing hard start and strong fishbites at 1500~2000 rpms, and I found only code P1217 "fuel solenoid response time too long"

The guy bought this truck just a month ago, to "travel safe with his family" he says, and he appears to be a bit discouraged....

I'd check fuel pressure for the fish bite. Also check for air. You don't say what year. put it on a scanner and see what the puter says for temps right after you start it. or pull the electrical plug off the CTS sending unit and see if it helps the cold start. if everything checks out normal it may be an IP going south.

IIRC it's a 1997 truck, but I'll be sure in a few hours when I'll check it.

I was thinking about the IP too, but this one is hard to start cold, and then starts almost easy when hot.

Last time when I checked codes, I also checked TDCO, which is set at -1.41 That's a good value, though, this truck does as if it has a bad timed IP (hard start, loss of power, fishbites)
I haven't got the opportunity to check fuel pressure, but I did the lift pump test : plenty of fuel at the T-valve...

Is it a homemade relocate cable? There maybe a bad connection.

If the fuel checks out, there's a couple accumulater springs in the rotor head, when one breaks up(it happens,i've seen a few) that can cause a hard cold start i been told

Have seen the truck this evening, a 1996 K1500 :
- AE scanner read code P1217 "fuel solenoid response time too long" which came back after I have erased it 2 days ago, even though he puts 2 stroke oil in the tank...
- LP works fine and I hot wired it to get sure it gets power
- Glow plugs and Glow relay are OK
- TDCO is at -1.41
- no air in fuel lines, found a leak at fuel manager heater and changed seals

Engine hard to start cold and idle rough for minutes, a bit of white smoke (unburnt fuel smell) according to what says the owner, goes better as it warms.
Starts fine when hot, idles fine.
Fishbites at around 1300~1700 RPMs, fine before, fine up above.
IP test passed : rev up to 2000 RPMs and slowly decreased the RPMs controling pedal accelartor : fine, was able to control decrease of revolutions, just notice it was a bit hard to
increase RPMS from 1300 to 2000, had to push the pedal stronger than it should

Could it be PCM or pedal accelerator assy ?

Tomorrow, he will try to start with CTS unplugged to see how she does.

Mechanic thinks injectors, I think IP
