OK, noises under my truck. Discovered at least 1 U joint is bad and the hanger bearing is toast. I have pulled both drive shafts and have no trouble with replacing the U joints. BUT How do you get the hanger bearing off and new one on??

It is sometimes called a carrier bearing. On my 1979 Chevy it had two bolts holding it on. One on each side. The carrier bearing was attached to a metal frame that was attached to a cross member by two bolts.

The metal frame was part of the new carrier bearing on the replacement part.

Wish I had pictures! One picture is worth more than a thousand words.

The carrier on my truck was a light press. I was told the shop guy was able to get it off with a piece of pipe that fit over the driveshaft and a few taps with a hammer.

Make sure you replace that carrier. Mine blew apart 130 miles from home leaving me stranded. :mad2:

been awhile,i believe they are pressfit on the shaft.

easyest way to get the brg off is after seperating the slip joint is to bust the outer race and grind the inner race trough with a zip disc on a angle grinder.the race comes off with little effort then.

clean up the shaft with emery cloth and install the new brg with some oil.A piece of tubing the size of the inner race and a hammer will drive it home.
you can use a piece of flat bar or a punch as well, but be carefull not to damage the seal.

also note what side the old brg faces the tranny so you dont err in putting the new one .:shiiiiiite:

Also be aware that there are a bunch of different ones, I ended up getting three from the parts store so I only had to pull the driveshaft out once. One fit, other two were not even close, no idea what cab configuration they fit but the book listed them all for my truck somehow. So either get all three and then return the ones you don't need, or pull the old one first and take it with you.
It is a press fit, like others stated. Not the worst job in the world, a little hammering and swearing will do it.

Job done

Well, the parts store did give me the right hanger/carrier bearing. But I coundn't not get the old one off. I hammered/cut and hammered some more, and gave up. I took it to the local shop I deal with and they had to air chisel it off.

But job's done. 3 new u joints, and new carrier. Nice and smoooooth now :smile5:.

No photos.... U joints are pretty straight forward. The only problem was the hanger bearing that was done at the shop.
