On my 94 Suburban. I bought the truck with an old black Stanadyne on it (mounted on IP) and have been running it since I bought it. I've been meaning to throw a spare in the back just in case. I've been telling myself to do that for months. Well this morning about 30 miles from home it started bucking on me and stalled out. I was able to restart it and coast into a parking lot.
The good news is. This morning before we left I finaly grabed a PMD kit to keep on the truck.
What are the odds??!!
Took about 10 minutes and I was back on the road, running stong.

The previous owner left some gloves in the storage in the back, I never really paid attention to them, but I thought it was neat to see they are a pair from GM. They have GM lettering on them. It must have been something GM included in the Suburban tool box? anyone know for sure?

Yeah, when you buy a $30,000 + SUV from them with one of those damn Elc Ip's, GM figured it's the least they could do! =D I've seen them alot in my GM body shop days.

Good thing you know a vendor that sells PMD kits with extension harnesses, heat sinks, and a solid warranty!

:D

Seen gloves in spare tire/jack kits all the time. It's a new vehicle thing...

At least you practice what you preach. Keep a spare!!!

If people are keeping a spare, we will not need to convert to mechanical IP!!! LOL!!!

Well I almost got burned. I threw the spare in there 30-45 minutes before I needed it. Someone was watching out for me!

I wish we could isolate the exact component in those PMDs that actually fails us. I know they are a sealed unit, but I can't help to think somebody (smarter than us maybe) could build a hot-rodded industrial strength version. Or at least one that is modular and repairable.

An example, I fixed a $2500 Miller plasma cutter that needed a *board* as the *fix it guy* said we needed.... $900 for said *board*. No-way.. I called Miller, got the values of the caps, resistors, FETs ETC. and fixed the *board* for $20... It was a lucky shot I guess, but it's still cuttin'...

Maybe I need to get into a 94-up so I'd have a chance to learn more. :)

the theory now is the pmd dies because of electrical "noise", possibly jumpstarts, and dramatic changes in temp. imho if there was a easy fix someone would of come up with it by now since the pmd has been out for 17 years

So it can't be done.

I bet nobody that is capable has taken the time.

Just buy a new PMD and fuhgeddaboudit , right?

Not always so. Sometimes easy fixes are ignored or overlooked for years and years.

If they would open season on gang bangers and tattoo a target on their forehead when they are picked up It would make them much easier to identify and would rapidly cut down on crime. Same as if they would incarcerate illegals for 6 months and ship them back when caught would cut down unemployment, save taxpayer dollars in many ways & cut our nations energy needs. Not to mention their removal would allow for the legal immigration of educated desirable non-muslum immigrants.

Easy fixes that have long been ignored.

Maybe part of the problem is they seem to think they have to be of a certain size and bolt hole configuration.

As far as I'm concerned tey could build one shoe box sized if it worked for 100,000 miles. I'd find a place to put it

You are correct. They are limiting the size themselves by saying that it has to be on IP.
I am sure doubling the current size probably will make the PMD last longer by having better potting materials or something like that.

One thing to remember though, that it is a business decision. The more we buy, the more money they make.

There is no money made if things last.

I just replaced a 30+ yr main drive belt on my swather, I'll be lucky if the new one lasts 5 yrs.

Got a pair of those in the '94 S10 Blazer and another pair in the '97 Tahoe. That set came in a nice zip-up black bag with a bunch of other stuff in it. I still have that in the wife's '07 Tahoe.

Well, I'd buy one of the 7 year warranty jobbies offered by Leroy or another popular seller and then "fuhgeddaboudit" :)

At least, "fuhgeddaboud" paying for a replacement for 7 years that is....

Several have attempted to repair it including Stanadyne the way they are potted internally they are pretty much junk by time you get to parts that might be repairable, remote mounting out of engine bay is longest survival location for them.
