You guys are obviously much more knowledgeable on diesels than I am...therefore, I will call you pros. I am looking at my first diesel and think I may have found a pretty good deal, but am very leery based on the bad things I have heard about 6.5L diesels. Don't get me wrong, I am not afraid, but I need to get your opinions. Here is what the ad says:

I have a 94 1 ton dually diesel with a 5 speed trans for sale. The truck is in pretty good shape body wise other then the paint on the hood. I replaced the injection pump two and a half years ago. Then within a month after replacing it I went thru a divorce and the truck sat for a year and a half. It had the new injection pump, a new lift pump, injecters, glow plugs, and batteries. Truck ran great. Now it is hard to start and smokes while running. I have been told that it is the pump again from sitting. I purchased another one on ebay and then decided that I am not messing with it again. My loss your gain. Truck will start and run , just hard to start.

I read the post on the "tests" when you are looking at one of these, but didn't want to make the purchase without consulting some experts. I did talk with the owner and he has the new injector pump, gave me the number of the place that put the old one in, seemed like an honest guy over the phone, told me it has right around 175k miles. I haven't seen it in person yet, but am going there tomorrow. Let me know your thoughts and any help is much appreciated.

Thanks!

What color smoke?
Check the coolant level. Start engine and see if the radiator hoses get hard fast. Possible head gasket. Or cracked heads or cracked block. Replacement engine surplus 6.2 can be put in for $1500 plus labor.

Possible bad glow plugs smoking white till it warms up.

Check oil level and maybe "lab" sample it for coolant.

Possible diesel is bad or has junk growing in it from sitting.

year and a half old diesel fuel is going to be some nasty crud. I've never heard of a pump failing from sitting, but anythings possible. But I also know people love to condemn the injector pumps on 6.5s, without ever opening the hood. If it's a real good price and you like the truck it may be worth flushing out the fuel system and running some fresh diesel through it. Just don't pay more than it would be worth parted out, in case it ends up being a bad motor.

Is that 175K miles on the IP? or 175K miles on the truck?

175K miles on IP is not new????

If the LP is new, chances are the OPS is bad.
It can also be the PMD or bad fuel filter or the GP.

There are 175k on the truck. Now I feel like an idiot, but like I said, this is my first diesel.

"If the LP is new, chances are the OPS is bad.

Need some definitions:
LP
OPS
PMD
GP

I know IP is injector pump, but am not 100% on the other abbreviations. Have some ideas, but not sure. He wants 2500.00 for it and that seems pretty low and fair to me. The paint is peeling off the hood, but I am a body man, so no worries there. Let me know your thoughts again. Thanks for all the help so far and if I pick this up tomorrow, I will be paying attention to this site daily...can't have it and not know how to work on it...

1.5 year old diesel has lost most of it's cetane value, so it's going to smoke. Pump most of that stuff out, put in some new and new filter while you're at it. May consider throwing some diesel biocide in the tank. IP should not go bad from just sitting.
