Hey Everyone,
New to this forum, but I am also on GMFullsize, TahoeYukonforum, FloridaTruckScene, S10Forum etc...
I have owned GM vehicles my entire life beginning with my 1976 El Camino Classic in 1986 and now I own a 1996 GMC Jimmy 4dr and recently bought a 1998 Yukon 4x4 (which brought me to this forum).
Im diving in and hitting the search function because the Yukon drove great the first day and it has gone downhill ever since.
If you have owned or own a 1998 Yukon and have had VSS sensor issues then please hit me up in a private message so I can pick your brain. What am I missing here? I am no moron when it comes to cars and I fix everything myself with the exception of tranny rebuilds or stuff requiring specialty tools.
This truck was giving me a hard time every time I hit a bump Id lose the speedo for a little bit and lose 3rd gear and O/D. Then the truck lost all speedo and 3rd altogether and it finally gave up some codes P0500 and P0502 for the VSS and low voltage to the VSS and a code for bank 2 sensor 2 oxy.
I have the NP8 transfer case so the VSS sensors (2) are in the tailshaft of the trans and they are identical. I replaced one, swapped it to the other when I still had no signal to the speedo. I found one burnt wire (white) right at the plug for the ECM. I reconnected the white wire *(on the connector labeled white) and also had to replace the 2 grounds at the back of the block that were destroyed from corrosion.
Still no speedo and still no pressure in 3rd gear. It will shift but does not engage fully as I can feel it slipping so I dont want to drive it in 3rd or O/D as it will burn the clutch pack if I dont fix the issue.
I dont have an OHM meter or test light so checking the harness is not an option for me or testing the sensors either. I still am throwing codes so I am going to bring it to a trans shop locally so I can get an estimate, but figured Id check around as these trucks all have the same common issues.
I hate electrical issues and its giving me a load of trouble. There was a wire shorting out on the column that made the dash click over and over when the tilt was adjusted, found that and removed it ( old disconnected toggle switch ) no more clicking.
Fixed the grounds, got a good leak in the trans, transfer case and rear main seal... not horrible but soaked the wires back there so Im sure thats what started half the problem and those grounds were SHOT and I am sure that had something to do with the electrical problem.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and Ive asked around on the other forums as well... HELP ME GET MY SPEEDO BACK AND MY RD GEAR. Its all highway here in CT and I can not go 10 feet with just second gear. HELP!
