We have 4 computers, ones an old Windows 98 that no hacker in their right mind would bother with...for once, it is good to be out of date!:rolleyes5:

Now for the three that are less old, and possibly at risk of attack:

Dell Dimesion Desktop, Intel Celeron Processor, Windows XP Home premium surely 32 bit (bought used, so not sure on anything), IIRC

3-4 month old Toshiba Satellite Running AMD Dual core processor, Windows Vista Home premium 64 bit

New Toshiba Satellite on Intel Core 2 Duo processor, Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.

The two laptops have came with a free trial of Norton, and neither has been activated. The dell was bought used and still has some life left in the subscription to Norton on it, and this dell has Spybot Search and destroy installed by me.

We all just use it for basic computing, internet surfing, and the ocasional DVD. The new toshiba is mine, and i will be running some 6.5L TD software on it. otherwise, just basic, regular, non-hacking stuff.

Now, after all the info is presented, I must ask, What needs done to protect these things?

I was wondering, what is wrong with running the microsoft stuff it came with? I was thinking of running Microsofts built in security, and possibly adding Spybot to give it a full deep scan every once in a while.

I had heard good about AVG, but apparently 9.0 isn't going well. I hear from a few of my friends, and ALL the techies i talk to that Norton sucks obscene things. I never thought it was bad, but maybe Norton interferes with their world of warcraft, so IDK why it is hated.

Im kinda lost as to what things a computer needs to stay safe, so any input would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

also, the two toshibas will be on public networks at colleges, and the XP will be running at home on dial up. hope this helps!

you might try and use microsoft security essentials, it is free and so far it seems to behave rather well.
I am running them on all of mine.

That's what's working for me and free is a great price. Don't know if it works with XP though.
Norton sucks. Talk about intrusive and a system hog! Sheesh!

I had heard good about AVG, but apparently 9.0 isn't going well.

When AVG 9 first came out it was for Win7. They released an update for everything else and it seems to be working well on all my stuff now - Win 7 64, Vista Pro 32 and XP.

It's free so you might give it a try - especially since it has spyware protection in the free version now.

I would first make sure all computers operating systems are up to date. It is important to keep them updated. I have used AVG and have had no problems with it. I haven't used any sort of anti-virus on my computer since I've upgraded to Windows 7 yet. But will eventually.

so does microsoft security essentials come installed, or does it need installed?

EDIT: just found out that it needs installed, but now i have a new question, do updates show up with others in the microsoft update system?

MSE sounds nice, so i think i will delete anything to do with norton and install MSE.

One final question, does MSE cover all a computers' needs for protection, or does something else need done?

I have a friend that ordered a new computer, but to finish out this semester, he needs a little more speed out of his older acer running xp (I believe home edition). he has McAfee, and I was wondering if it was as bad of a resource hog as Norton? If not, is it still more of a hog than MSE? any increase in speed would be nice, and it is some sort of a promo computer that they have to wipe clean and turn back soon anyways.

I use Avast, and malwarebytes,, No issues EVER!

And Tuneup Utilitites 2007 for all of my Registry defraging, cleaning and Maintanance.

Also DeFraggler for windows defragging, it beats the crap out of the Windows defrag.

I have 4 hooked up also. 2 desktops with XP, one with vista and a laptop with XP. I can not get the Vista computer to see the XP computers. I ran microsofts hot fix and it didn't work. How are you getting all your to see each other?

I use McAfee on all the comps.

firewall Sygate Pro for XP and older
ZoneAlarm or Comodo for newer
Antivir only Antivir.de

all free and the best to use.

hardware does not matter that you have only the OS.
