Thanks.
Im waiting on some more parts so I can start the rebuilding.

Trans/tcase are getting droped off tomorrow.

Its the original 599 block and heads. I was going to swap in a 6.2 military motor, but there are to many subtile differences (as I found out the hard way). I just had the machine shop check the 6.5 for cracks and hone the cylinders and a valve job.
So now I have two 6.2's that I can sell cheap if someone needs one (or two).

Lookin good! Since you said it's not ford blue, What color is it? Custom mix?

Wow! When you get that all done it will be one sweet looking motor.

The blue looks nice!

I can't wait to see it with those sweet looking valve covers on! ):h

Thanks Marty, I can't wait ethier. Will post more pics as I progress.

Davo, I used H&H machine shop in La marqe. They are very good. Charged $150 to magniflux block, hot tank it and hone the cylinders.
$132 to magniflux heads and a valve job.

Envous of all who do this, as this is beyond my capabilities and my wallet. Love to watch this stuff.

Those prices seem very fair!! Now you re-assemble and bring it back to have it balanced??? Or is it balanced? or is that not necessary??

Howdy, if you are having one balanced they would do it in peices and then assemble it.
Im not having it balanced.

Curious is all, i'm sure its close without balancing, and without balancing the injectors pop psi's wouldn't make much difference. How much was a balance?

I was under the assumption they balance the entire rotating assembly once it was put together, hence the stock harmonic Balancer for balancing vs the fluidampr.

Im not sure what they would have charged. I didint have an interest in having it done on this engine, but like you said it should already be close anyway.
I understand that they would weigh each rod and piston then remove material from each until they are the same weight as the lightest one. The crank, flywheel and HB are all done on a special machine that rotates them and somehow can tell where weight needs to be removed. I don't know how that machine works.

I weighed my original pistons/pins & rods to get an idea of how much variation there was. Considering the relatively low rpm these engine's turn, it wasn't terrible.

Still, I'm accustomed to tighter tolerances so I had the rotating assembly balanced. If someone's considering balancing their 6.5 build, it's good to know some shops with balancing equipment may not have enough bob-weight to balance these heavier diesel components.

Here are my OEM piston/pin & rod weights for an example of factory tolerances:

Piston/pin (g) (max delta 5.5g): 1271.5 1269.5 1271.0 1272.0 1266.5 1268.0 1269.0 1268.5

Rods (g) (max delta 5.5g): 1121.0 1121.0 1121.0 1123.0 1123.0 1118.0 1117.5 1118.0

max piston/pin/rod combo variation cylinder to cylinder = 6.5g

I had a 6.2 balanced once. The guy I rebuilt it for was a dentist and even he could tell how much smoother it ran. He said several people commented on it.
