I found a 1995 Chevy 6.5 3500 DRW crew cab nv4500 for $1800, I have him talked down to $1500. It has 192,000 miles on it. Owner says it started smoking and died. Thats all the info i have so far. What do y'all think? I have a 1994 that i can yank the motor from, but i want this one for the tranny and cab. Opinions?

From what i've seen the tranny is worth most of that much. Could be something very simple with the engine. Pretty good gamble.

OK I went and bought it Tuesday and drug it home. Gonna pull the motor from the 94 and stick it in there, since the motor is locked up.

Got the locked up motor out.....figured out the turbo is trashed.....monday will start with the running motor. taking the bed, engine, doors, and front clip from my 94 and putting them on the new truck. Gonna have a lot of spare parts.....

GY where u at Gulf Coast ??? you didn't get hurt on that vehicle plenty of stuff to part out and make your $$$ back on.

Locked up engine & turbo, it suffer a oil line fail & instant oil pressure loss ???

Located in Jasper, TX......turbo isn't locked, just wore out. Has a lot of shaft endplay. I have not seen any indication of oil line failure, but there isn't any oil showing on the dipstick either.....ooops

Not bad lol we left the grill and quarter panels on when I pulled mine it was dangling pretty high in the air but it slid right out. You oughta do the feed the beast and get an A team turbo on it while you got easy access to the motor.

i will later, funds are on tight restriction until i sell some of the leftovers lol....basically am taking 2 trucks and building what i want. need anything?

Gonna end up with a crew cab dually, w/ nv4500, 3.42 rear end gears.

Cool man, that should work out good. The NV can take some of the dog out of the 3.42's and still keep the mileage... I like it.

yeah i have 235/85 16's and by the calculator that will put me at 1900 rpm @ 70. I do a lot of highway travelling and tow a 38' 10000 lb travel trailer several times a yr. should work out pretty well. The 3.42's in 4th will give me a couple hundred more rpm's than the 4.10's in OD did before, so more pulling power at speed, and then when not towing, 5th will drop[ the rpms down nice and low for a relaxed ride

got the good motor pulled today and went and bought a new clutch and valve cover, oil pan gaskets and a rear main seal. Also had to order a new ring gear for the flywheel. Will separate the auto tranny and good engine tomorrow and get it all cleaned up and painted while waiting for the ring gear to come in on wednesday.

Nice score.I have the 3.40 gears in my 92 that is my daily driver. It will tow 10,000 with no problems. I have a automatic but rarely have to manually drop to d3.

OK.....update.....the truck is together finally. My brother and girlfriend and I have been busy most of the last month. WOW, what a lot of work! I've put about 600 miles on it so far. A few notes.....Using the same engine as before, I've gained about 1-2 mpg, i guess because of the NV4500. Even with the added weight of the crew cab over the extended, i can feel an improvement in the amount of power getting to the ground. It feels as if the engine is not having to work as hard to get the truck moving. Just learned how to rebuild a rearend these last two days, not nearly as difficult or mysterious as i always thought it was. Just have to be careful and follow instructions and use some common sense. Installed 3.42 gears and new bearings. Hardest part was setting the pinion bearing preload. I made it about 5 miles down the road when i blew an oil cooler line:rolleyes5: I'll clean up the mess and replace the line tomorrow and really try it out.
