Hey Guys,

Trying to track down an issue and want to record live data with ScanTech.

Is this even possible? I have been through all of the features and all I can find are screenshots - I want to take 'video'.

If it is not possible via ScanTech, is there any software available that can 'tape' what is on my laptop screen? Kind of like how you can print your screen?

Also, what is memory dump? I looked on Stefan's site, but it isn't clearly explained anywhere I can see...

I think the closest you will come to video would be successive screen shots. The memory dump is to erase past screen shots. Leo

That sucks.

I am trying to get a screenshot of my fishbite - gonna be tough to hit the snapshot button at the exact same time as the bite....

Chris, I'm not sure about "memory dump". I finally got it installed on my laptop (damn vista) I haven't connected to the truck yet so I'm not sure what it does. The only memory I was aware of was the screen shots. Leo

A memory dump is usually (at least in this situation) a dump of whatever data you're seeing to a text file.

You can get software such as SnagIt that will record whatever is on your screen and save it to a wmv file.

The memory dump on GMTDScan is the program on your chip, the actual code that runs it all. Chip burning hardware is like $85 too. Tells you how much they make off the chips once the R&D of the code edits is finalized.

So if I press the memory dump button, it will give me all of the information on the GL4?

I'm not sure that will work, Chris. WMRecorder is stream-capture software, and works by identifying a video stream that is coming into your PC through a Windows Socket or Port. The feed you are getting from GMTDscan is a data stream that the software is converting to display. Different stuff.

Buddy, the software won't 'dump' the chip configuration, only the performance data. The actual reflash data is compiled much differently than that. Reverse-engineering a flashed program is a fair bit more complicated than that, as is burning EEPROMs.

Not very long ago, there was only one commercial program available that would handle the programming and compilation for this task; I know the owner sold the software/hardware to John Kennedy, but I'm not sure if Stefan bought it or made his own; certainly, from a technical standpoint, it's all possible, but there are a lot of parameters to a reflash that don't even show... attention to which is why there is a difference in chip types and results, and why the early chips and reflashes had an annoying tendancy to melt pistons in trucks towing heavy.

Hmmmm.....maybe you and John should start a firmware\flash sticky specifically for collating information specific to GM 6.5-related pcware scantools and procedures\workarounds - could be a good area for programmers to 'reason, together', a dumping place for highly useful techniques and data for those with inquiring minds - whaddaya thimk?

Had the Scantech hooked up on the way to work this morning and wouldn't you know it, no fishbiting.....go figure...

I was watching TC slip, closure time, cam ref missed, eng temp, RPM, and fuel delivery (mm^3).

No huge movements on any of the numbers....I guess that corresponds with no bites...

Just like real fishing, when you actually want to catch one, there is nothing in the lake...

BTW - gotta love 10*F IATs....

Chris I sent this in 2008 to Engh Motors, with a reply, if its any help..

The Memory Dump how´s that suppose to work as i`m getting some, if remember rightly errors.

You click the button and wait until it has completed the read. It is a feature with VERY little real world use... you really need to know your stuff around ecm/bin-hacking to put it to use.........

If it made .bin file even with errors, i'd like to see it :rolleyes5: I think i know how to use it :D Made little reverse engineering in last months...

I'm working on mine in the garage so it wont be running for a few days....

But I don't think you can take a snapshot of this and if so I'm sure its cryptic.....
