HP Laptop with Windows XP. It has 4 USB plug receptacles. All are working

Software is downloaded and registered per Engh instructions. A check in tools settings shows the default to be COM4. Try to connect to the truck and it tries COM1 and it says that is being used by another device. I try the ALDL cable in each USB receptacle and I get the same error.

E-mailed Stefan, no answer. He was very prompt when it was money coming in. Beginning to think this is a big waste of time and money.

Let me repeat this.

I go to Tools Settings in GMTDScan. In the Com Port box it shows "COM4". I click on the drop down and NO OTHER OPTIONS ARE SHOWN. I type COM1 in the box and I get an error trying to connect. What I'm saying is that I am not seeing anything that allows me to redirect the com port.

Then it is COM4, you have to find which one is COM4 for your USB port. You said there are 4 of USB. Try it one at a time. Did it download the driver yet? when you plug it in. There is a test under Help and settings under Tools on the menu.

This only can be done with trial and error. You know Windows fault.

Don't get mad at me, I am just trying to help. With your attitude, nobody's going to help. Just a friendly note.

OK, I'm not getting mad at you. I was just trying to be very specific as to what I've done so we don't repeat what has already been done.

For example, I have tried the cable in every USB receptacle and I get the same "no connection result."

Do I need to reboot the computer each time I try this? Will that change anything?

I have already tried the ALDL Interface Test under "Help". In the Com Port box it shows "COM4" and the drop down does not offer any options. I run the test and it shows Opening COM4....COM4 Open. Then it begins COM Test #1 and it says "Successful". Same for COM2 and COM3..."Successful". I go back to force it by typing "COM1" in the com port box and again run the interface test. It says "opening COM Port, COM1.....ERROR!" "Error opening serial port. Check your port settings and try again."

I've gone into the device manager and checked all USB Port settings and they all check out OK.

That is where I'm stuck at.

I think you have to have your cable plugged in while looking at the Device Manager, It is a different Driver than the others. It doesn't show up if it isn't plugged in.

Once you have it set up its quite simple and very useful. Stefan is usually responsive, but he probably has a day job :)

Did you install the driver for the ALDL cable? Perform Interface test

Also in the settings it needs to be set up for 8192 baud rate and echoing interface.

I dragged my son into help. Showed him my history here. We went through the settings, ALDL interface tests, etc. Then went to device manager and clicked on the ALDL item which showed no driver. Then went to the ENGH Motors website and found a driver for windows XP and downloaded that. Then using device settings we set it to COM1. Then when we went back to GMTDScan > Tools > Settings the COM PORT box did have a drop down option for COM1, which we selected. We ran the ALDL Test and it worked. Then went out to the truck and it connected.

I think Stefan needs to add one more bullet point to his instructions: Download the device driver from his website that is appropriate for your operating software. Without that instruction, the remaining instructions do not get you there.

OK now that my son and his wife have departed, I can start up the truck, smoke the place out and use the GMTDScan to see what's up with this engine.

I'm located in Sweden (Europe) so me being prompt is a matter of "timing"... there is a 6-9 hour time difference depending on where in the US you are located. I usually answer the days GMTDScan e-mails sometime between 20:00-01:00 CET. All incoming e-mails gets answered within 24 hours.
I'll try to reword the license delivery e-mail to be more clear. Providing the driver download link for the cable is obviously not enough for all customers :smile5:

windows com port problem

hi there two ways to change com port settings one in GMTDscan and in windows under device man under advance settings to force windows to match
the settings in GMTDscan and also the device driver that is the latest is at FTDI CDM Drivers 2.06.00 for your operating system there are two types in the download read about at there web site and they are right until the is plugged
in it will not show up in device manager the message that you are getting
about com port already in use can also mean that some device is grabbing the port before GMTDscan in my setup i installed the drivers and plugged in the
cable and windows said new hardware found installing driver the complete
then i opened device manager there was com port 3 with default settings
did not change a thing opened GMTDscan and under settings com port defaulted to com port 3 shut down the system went out to the truck plugged
the cable in booted the system up opened GMTDscan did the test under help
all went fine hit connect to truck all worked fine if it were me i would uninstall
the drivers go to FTDI'S web site and download the latest drivers for your operating system install them plug the cable in and see if you get the windows popup saying found new hardware and then check device manager
and see what com port is there then start GMTDscan and check it there if both match it should work if they don't match change in device manager under com/lpt properties/advaced change comport to match GMTDscan
also go to the top of device manager menu bar the little computer icon click
to rescan hardware after changes then try it should work fine
