I know this really isnt engine related, but i thought you guys might be able to help. Was wondering if I would be able to use doors from a 92' on my 96'. The 96 has the newer interior, so I was wondering if I can just swap the newer door panels onto the old doors from the 92. All the jams look exactally the same from the outside, but i havent pulled the panels to look at them side by side.

The base model doors on my 96 are really starting to rot bad on the bottoms, but I have a pair from my 92' that are full power and rust free! (about the only thing on the truck that hasnt rusted oddly)

thanks
Nick

You can prob. Look on LMC Truck at the Naked Door Pics to See if they are Similar between the Years on the Interior Side.

do you how much different the metal insert panels are from one to another? They look like they are close by just peeling back the inner panels to peek. Both have the fresh air flaps towards the rear of the door.

The metal panel should be the same ,it's the inside handle and possibly the linkage that's the biggest difference. LMC Truck's breakdowns are very helpful. Compnine may have a breakdown of the doors also http://www.compnine.com/vid.php

What is the best source for replacement doors? I need 6 for my suburban and I'm not sure if it's better to go to the junk yard or buy replacement shells, Thanks.

You are best to buy from a local auto body supply such as Keystone automotive.I just bought inner fenders from them at less than half the cost with shipping that rockauto wanted. Both were certified parts.Non-certified parts are quite a bit cheaper.
Here's a pretty good on-line place but as anywhere the shipping is the most expensive part http://www.shermanparts.com/ecat/base/index.php
Or here: http://www.lmctruck.com/

Doors are all the same to my knowledge, in every year GMT-400.

The "cassette" (black metal panel on the inside) that holds the linkages and regulators may be different by year and options (power windows, etc).

But, you should be able to just take the "cassette" out of your old door and bolt it in to the new ones.

Personally, I would try to find good rust free yard replacements (if you don't live in the rust belt).

I haven't been very impressed by the quality and fitment of most aftermarket sheet metal in the last 5-10 years. It seems, like everything else these days, replacement "bits" are not up to snuff of most OE parts (cost cutting vs profit margin vs quality)

good info, I bought a used set of 88 doors for my 97 last year, of course I still havent got around to painting them and putting them on, but I've been worried about when I go to install my 97 power windows and locks and interior that it might not match up. Sounds like I got nothing to worry about.

remember, I said should....

You may have to drill the "pass through holes" for the wiring if your 88 doors were manual. Probably have to transfer over the rods to the door handles/locks also...

The best bet to get 6 that you need,, is to get used. they will always come with all of the inards,,, and they are a direct swap,, if you get New door shells for our trucks,, they almost always,, come with NO HINGES! Door hinges are 2 piece affairs,, and when you get the new shell, the door half of the hinge, will need to be located,, drilled and bolted on,, and heaven help you if you mis by just a bit! Not to mention, you have to drill out the old welds,, then air chisel off the old door half hinge. Doing body work for a living,, I always HATED to see these trucks come in, and Not have used parts.

That sounds like a good plan. The problem may be where I live - the rust belt - so I wonder what kind of used parts I'll be finding locally. On the other hand, I've seen many 99 and earlier subs running around here in great shape. I don't understand why mine rusted out so badly. Main body is good, it just looks like I got a bad batch of doors or something.

The weatherstrips on the glass make a big difference. If they leak the salt gets inside the door so it's getting it from both sides.
Around here some junkyards import rust free doors ect from the south. A few private parties also haul parts from the south and west. Some will take orders for whatever you need.

Thanks for the info guys. I know some modification is going to be required as I am going from manual doors to power ones. I've been searching for a rust free set for a while now and have come across nothing. Here in the rust belt, most of what is in the junkyard belongs there. The best bet is to try and find a sub or Yukon with factory running boards that helped save the door bottoms. Otherwise the rust is really hit or miss. The doors that I am going to use are from our 92 that we have had since new. Rest of the truck is rotted but the doors are perfect. Maybe the mudflaps helped some. I don't know. Either way, I still have to find a set of gray power inner panels before I can do the swap.
