My intake and exauhst vanes have started into the houseing. I know the turbo is junk, but i don't have the money together yet for an ATT. I just happen to have a rebuild kit for a gm-x. My question is, is it worth rebuilding it to hold me over for another month or so? Could it hurt anything? I know it will be inefficiant, but everything should be fine right? I kind of need the truck to make the money for the new turbo.
Also does anyone have an aluminum end cap/seal support for this turbo? I broke mine on disassembly and the kit I have did not include it.

I would not use that Turbo as is.It'll disintegrate and destroy your engine.
a rebuilding of yours will prob need the shaft and wheels as well(pricy)
I can help you with a used good Allu seal support.

I replaced the bushings and seal rings in it today. There is much less play in the shaft. Can't really tell for sure as i do not have the seal plate or the intake wheel on and tightened down. I think it will work for now. Since there will no longer be wheels grinding into the houseing should I expect any futher damage? I droped the pan, cleaned it out, threw a new pump in there, and changed the oil. I was starting to have oil preasure issues. Hopefully the bearings survived. I don't feel like dropping the pan again and opted not to check them while I was in there. I PMed you about the seal plate.
Thanks for your help.

Not sure how long it had been dragging. Started having an oil preasure issue and i was hearing a noise that sounded like the turbo when I shifted. So I checked it out and found massive play on the shaft. Tore it apart and found more damage then I had hoped for. There was very little wear showing on the shaft. The fins on the wheels seem to have gotten a little shorter and the housing is scored. Once I got it all cleaned up it didn't look too bad. I'm not that concerned about the balance, as this happened while it was spinning so it shouldn't be too bad.

If you have a shop that could balance the turbo this could reduce your risk. The shop could also make a better guess at how bad the damage is. Sounds like a lot of metal was removed from the wheels. I would not trust the balance or turbo after that. 100,000+ RPM takes a lot to stay toghether and can be a grenade.

What did you find in the pan - anything of note? (Metal that you could read part number on for example? ):h )

What shape is the engine in? Rest of the truck? This can help you answer the question of is the risk worth it. Turbo fails and takes engine out is the risk you are looking at.

Maybe a different cheaper turbo option like a used HX 35 could fit your budget now and get the ATT later.

Bison is hooking me up with the plate i need. So hopefully I'll have it back together soon. I found nothing in the pan. Well, nothing that souldn't be there. I hope it's all in the filter the I changed.
The rest of the truck is really nice. I havn't had it long. Bought it with a warped head. Fixed that and the PMD went out on the test drive. Fixed that and now this a couple of days later. This truck and I have gotten to know each other real quick. I'm not sure I am a big fan of the reliability of these 6.5's

chance, first welcome to The Truck Stop!!! We have the best 6.5 experts on the web right here for you. They will have all the answers and fixes to turn that rig of yours into a reliable machine. I'm pretty sure most of them at one time or another have been in your shoes. Give them some time to work their magic.......

I've been where you were about 4 years ago when I bought my rig. Found these guys here, fixed the stalling (FOR GOOD) with a PMD relocation, then I had about a 2 year stretch of flawless running. Then a valve issue, few regular repairs, and I'm enjoying over another year stretch of flawlessness.

Get addicted to this forum (as if your not already :))
Get anal about clean grounds, add some extra block/frame block/cab, neg/frame grounds.

Clean all your fuses.

By clean I mean dremel them super shiny, fuses, grounds, everything.

She'll repay you for your recent love giveth :)

My problems have been 2 PMD's, the first was on the IP and the second was the pos mount on the intake. 3 yrs in the bumper with no problems. One starter just recently. They are fairly reliable if set up right.

This site made the difference between enyoing these trucks or commiting financial suicide over them.
Now they are addictive,as is this G-damn site.

Well look on the bright side. Parts are cheap. Grenade a turbo and a replacement 6.2 (conversion to turbo) used surplus can be had for $950.00 or less. 6.5's for $1500 or less.

Look forward to quality time with your truck till you get it ironed out and yes they were like this new. So relocate the PMD or eliminate it with a DB2 conversion.

Thanks for the pep talk guys. I think I have a new found inspiration to fix my truck.
By the way the pmd is behind the front bumper.
Thanks for the tip about the grounds. That sounds like it comes from a man the has had some issues there.

Chance when I bought my 1st one in 2000, I was told that I was making biggest mistake ever, that was 165K miles ago, some TLC and these are the BEST Diesels to own IMO, will they make most horsepower NO, will they make enough reliable horsepower and an affordable price for 99% of your power needs, MOST DEFINITELY

Easily maintained, and with some minor modifications made to be very reliable, we 6.2/6.5 enthusiasts have a passion for these trucks we took what GM should have done and put it into practice, their focus was creating a new vehicle market within confines of new regulations ergo the Dmax came to pass.

Ours ??? keep these "dinosaurs" of the Diesel world alive as best we can afford to, some of us have pushed the envelope more than others so we can also have some fun with ours. One of our mentors/members Bill Heath has built a twin turboed 6.5 racer setting the bar for speed with a 6.5 @ 158mph last fall in Bonneville.

So you you have stumbled on the right location for 6.5 info, as we live-eat-& breathe 6.2 & 6.5s on top of that you'll find that TTS more than any other site is a family :grouphug:

I'm glad I've found the right place for detroits. I have big plans for a duel turboed 6.2 cucv I've had lying around for awhile. Once I get the remodel finished on the house and I get my monster garage back up and running, I'm sure that this place will be a huge help with that project.

I will wrap this thread up once I know the results (or devistation) of my halfassed turbo rebuild. Where do the little smilly faces come from? One with crossed fingers or praying would be appropriate for me right now.

Once again thanks for all of your help and advice.
