On my new top of the line pickup truck the glow plugs only run for about 8 seconds. It fires right up but now that its cold its not long enough. After they run the first time they wont light up again except flash on for a second.

Umm Ok Michael,, Seeing your 1044 post,, I know you have read a few on the Glowplug override mod. I'll be you a cold day in Hell (Michigan that is) that once you do this mod,, you'll kick your own behind for not doing it sooner!!

Shoot man, you want to come on over to Lake Odessa, MI and I'll help you put one in over a few beers, How's next Saturday sound?

Tell you what,, you do the manual torque lock up on my truck while I do the glow override on yours!!

Ive never dinked with the glow plugs before. Id like to get them working like they should since this rig is probably going up forsale.

Ok,, well if you haven't changed them, then you should and use Bosch Deratherms,, Rock Auto with the coupon code listed on our fourms will yeild the best price, pretty easy to do, If they still don't start to your satisfaction then the mod will be in order.

The last guy who had it did head gaskets about a year ago, he said he was going to change the glow plugs but maybe he didnt. Ill have to ask, I figured they were new but maybe he decided to cheap out.

Even in cool weather (say 40*), I'll probably get about 3 - 5 flashes. Regardless if the plugs are good, there should still be more after-glow (assuming your temps are at least as cold as mine, in Eastern PA).

Try disconnecting the Temp sensor at the T-stat and see how it starts. I'm a little fuzzy this morning - someone correct me if I'm wrong on the location?

My other 6.5 the glows run for around 30 seconds, then you start it and then the light back up for maybe 10 seconds.

Ill try the temp sensor thing.

The 92's had everything in the controller/relay, no external sensors to unplug. Sounds like a bad controller/relay. Swap it with your other truck.

Michael, look in the Technical Reference Library, under Glow Plugs. There are a couple of pictorial DIY articles on Glow Plug Over-ride relays... very cheap and easy to do.

I just read one about 10min ago. If I cant get it to work right Ill do this with a push button switch.

Midnite: Thanks for the correction. Just for clarification, when did external sensors start being used? OBDII?

Michael: Sorry for the mis-information.

Gosh darn it dennis you had me out there playing around for hours in the cold.

Just kidding ):h I never got around to going out there but I thought these were some how hook up to a temperature sensor too. On my other truck they run alot longer in the cold, seems like they would be connected to a temperature sensor.

I guess we are supposed to get 1-4ft of snow. I may go christmas shopping instead of playing with this today. I guess I better park it out of the way, a 2wd truck doesnt like snow.

That's alright, I deserve a little razzing!

But, I am glad you saw Midnight's post before you started looking for it:smile5:

2WD? Yeah, no kidding! Sometimes I drive the Burb around in the snow in 2WD just to remind myself of why I need 4WD. Although, 2WD does make for more fun going around corners! :D:D

They went to the coolant temp sensor(CTS) in 94 with the electronic IP and let the PCM control the glow time.

The 93 and older do have a temp switch(on-off) though, for advance and high idle, its closed below 100ºF. Its located in the thermostat crossover, where the 94 up have the temp sensor.
