glow plug overide. why?

I know why we do it. My question is why do we ad another relay? If the computer grounds the glow plug relay to trigger it then wouldnt it make scence to run a momentary switch to ground and the negetive of the relay? just seems easier and less expensive. Any thoughts?
 
There has been discussion on this and IIRC it's doable but needs a diode to keep from backfeeding the pcm. I believe it's in the stickies in chris1500s thread
 
I thought that that method threw CEL/SES codes....can't remember for sure though...

I liked the idea of having the second relay anyways since I have been in the middle of nowhere in the frigid cold with a malfunctioning OEM GP relay and having the second relay was peace of mind....
