mornin folks, quick question got the dually runnin in july and so far so good. i was reading apost and it said something about the glow plug light. now up to this point i havent seen a glow plug light. i live in so. cal and it rarely gets below 40 degrees.so my question is.....where is the light and does this mean my glow plugs arent working at all? the truck starts fine but im wondering if it was colder, would i have problems.upon start up i see a small wisp of white smoke.thanks for all your help.

GP light (on my '98) is on the left side of the tach. There should be a picture (of your dash layout) in your manual to tell you where it is. I don't know if the light "not lighting" is an indicator of the controller not working, or if it means the dash light is burnt out. But, even in summer temps, it should still light (although for a much shorter time).

You can tell if your glow system is at least "somewhat" working by watching your volt gauge. Turn the key to "on" and observe the volt gauge. If you see it dip "down and up", the GP's are pulling power. If it never changes, you likely have a bad controller.

The bulb can be bad also. If you never have it, then that is probably what happened.

It is not terribly difficult to change, just pull out the trim and then take off a few screws and cables/harness.

Not trying to thread jack you here sir, but..

..I have 2 wait to start lights on my 96 gmc. One to the left of the tach, that never lights up, and one above the tach, that's the one that lights up. Anyone else have that?

Just wondering out loud (well, for me it is out loud... for all of you it's pretty quiet)... '96 was a transition year to OBDII, right? Is your '96 OBDI? Wondering if OBDI had it above the tach... Don't know the year of the OP's truck.

No, mine is OBDII. I had thought that too, since 95 was the year for new interior but OBDI engines, it may be something like that.

not trying to insult you but you do realize it doesen't say "glowplug" mine says wait to start

OBD1 says glow plugs, and OBD2 says wait to start. If this is an OBD1 truck, then also check the glow plug fuse in the fuse panel under the hood as all it is for is the glow plug light in the cluster.

This was discussed awhile back on the other site, and I wanted to say some said the canadian dashes used the other light for some reason. but only 1 of the wait to start lights will be used.

thanks for all the replies, its a 95 and ive never seen any light other than the ses and the normal ones i will check the fuses and controller today also would it matter where the controller is mounted? cuz when i put the motor back in i didnt know where to mount it.as i stated b4 i towed this truck home so i never saw it completely together. i mounted it on one of the valve cover bolts.would that affect the ground maybe? thanks for all the help.

Do you have a harness with connector that goes to one side (back towards the firewall) of the controller and 2 big cables with lug ring going into the controller?

Its original location is close to the firewall towards the driver side. I don't think that harness will reach too far.

Well, for whatever reason, I couldn't get the sun to shine just right to see any "ghost" images of unlit dash lights. My manual only showed one "wait to start" light. It did say "US Dash shown, Canadian slightly different". But, it didn't expand on that.

there should be 2 studs on the drivers side rear of the intake,, that is where Mine is bolted too with 2 nuts holding it down.

Also ALL of your dash lights should light up, when you first turn the key on, this is just a test to show that all idiot lights are working. :agreed:
