I have a friend that has a 92 K2500 with a manual tranny, he wants me to take the oil pan off and see what the bearings look like, has anyone removed the pan in a 4x4 while the motor is still in the frame, it looks like I could raise the motor up and leave everything bolted up (tranny), it looks like there would be enough room to get the pan out but maybe not....... I know that taking the motor out would be the easiest but we don't really want to unless we half to ... anyone been able to get the pan out without removing the motor and only lifting it up in the frame???

The truck is new to him, we might replace the bearings if much wear shows... the motor runs good, but things don't look like maintenance was very high on the other owners list either.... I don't want the work of pulling the motor, but he roped me into helping him.....

Havint done it still in the truck, but seems very doable by memory. Raise engine and if needed lower diff. Should be plenty of room? Again Im just seeing it in my mind though.

I would suggest dropping the front differential. Then you will have all the room you need. Change diff seals while its out.

Lower or drop the diff would be the best option. (most room)

Its pretty tight with the diff installed, plus the extra work to get the pan bolts on the left side will be easier with the diff out.

remove drive shaft, unbolt half shafts, remove three mounting bolts, out.

Yea, I see more work for ME here....LOL.. I might try removing the ops and the fan & things in the front and lift the front up as far as I can and leave the tranny bolted to the crossmember and see how much room there is, if I need to the diff will come down....

Just did mine 4months ago... Fought with it by jacking the engine up etc and finally admitted defeat and pulled the 3 bolts for the diff and the thing just about fell out, didn't even undo the axle shafts just let the diff hang. IMHO for all the time to pull the fan and ops and mount bolts I would stick with pulling the diff

Pay the money for an oil sample. What is the oil pressure? Touching the main bolts adds stress to a crack prone area. How much blowby does the engine have? Blowby is the number one indicator to engine condition although it can be high from overheating the rings with good bearings.

Not worth it to check the bearings if the oil pressure is good.

Only reason to suspect main bearing failure is if the front oil seal is leaking badly.

Otherwise you are pulling the engine to rebuild it anyway.

IMO bad idea and unnecessary work.

yea, already sent a sample off, not going to pull anything until the sample comes back.... too much work to just have a look me thinks...
