How much is a GEP 6.2 and another GM 6.2 worth together ? They are on gov liquidation auction locally. I guess the GEP would be the best of the 6.2's ?

The lot went for $830. so I left it go ,I did bid to $400 though. Seemed like to much money to gamble that it was good,it did look kinda new . Also you have to fill out a form that can take 60 days to clear. I seen one listing in SC that looked brand new .

I have seen an auction for a 6.2 engine that was all built up like a 6.2 but had a 506 block. I am unsure if they used new 6.5 blocks in place of a 6.2 block or they actually cast a 506 6.2 block? Oil squirters on a 6.2, probably not, more likely 6.5s going into 6.2 applications and GEP selling old GM stock

I've been watching the auctions, too. My plan is to come up with a good (hopefully new) surplus motor to put into my dually after Christmas. It seems though, that the prices have been climbing! :nonod:

At the end of July, these brand new GEP motors were available at Fort Jackson, SC:

A few weeks later, this used 6.2 motor at Fort Carson CO, looked mighty interesting, but I wasn't ready to bid, yet:

This 6.5NA motor was at San Antonio last month. Getting a little pricey!

And finally, these auctions, at Fort Jackson SC, ended Friday. OUCH!! :yikes::yikes::yikes:

I get the fact that they're new and have been 'in the can' since their production date two years ago, but geez, that's way outta my league. I'll keep watching, but it's looking like a used motor is going to be what I end up with. $250 for a solid block and the necessary sheet metal isn't too bad. Missy Goodwrench is doing this for her dually; it's looking like a pretty good plan.

A brand new one for $2200, rebuilds still cost more than that though. Them expensive ones I was looking at too, have 506 block, but says 6.2, so might actually be a 6.5 as a 6.2

Yeah, after looking at those two most recent auctions, the $750 motor earlier this summer doesn't seem so bad! I get what you're saying about the total cost, though. Even at that price, it's still a bargain to be able to pull it out of the crate, bolt on the civilian oil pan, the correct IP, and go with it. It's just WAY more than I had in the engine budget.

Use the following when bidding on a unknown AS-IS engine:

$950 guaranteed to run 30 days or more is not a bad deal for a surplus 6.2. http://www.boyceequipment.com/ (plus shipping.) Esp if you use the heads off it etc. Did not say crack free, just running. I got lucky and wound up with a rebuilt engine. So with a new starter, header wrap, etc. I changed the engine for ~$2000.00 and 3 weeks.
You can figure 2 days labor out and 2 days labor in. Weekend to pull the heads and replace the head gaskets. You should replace the exhaust manifolds while you are there.

So figure that as a reference for getting a good running low mile engine. A GEP rebuild may be worth more. But the tech could have dropped a nut down the intake and pulled the engine back out after the extra KP duty. AS-IS...

I looked at a 6.2 in the junk yard today. It was painted grey, and had no bumps in the valley spelling out numbers. It also had bosses in the valley for a center mount turbo, but they where not drilled. It said 6.2 in the front where they all do . Does a smooth valley mean GEP ? It was in a bread van and I should have gotten the numbers on the back of the block. Are the last 3 numbers allways the block number ? What are some of the GEP numbers,or is it just the 506 ? I think the van was a 1984,but had a newer / Jasper 6.2 , and had warranty over heat tags on the heads.

Thank you. This one had the exact same bosses for the turbo, but smooth valley. I guess it could simply be a late 6.2 ?

Thats worth $1000 and a drive! Although if you start bidding on it the others will keep going I am sure. But thats worth more than $1000 for sure.
