I did my annual maintenance yesterday by changing all oil and fuel filters and replacing the oil with Rotella T (12 quarts due to the FS2500 bypass oil filter) . I change my fluids only once a year due to all the extra filters. It is much easier to do the maintenance in June! ;) I also do a UOA just to back the fluids up and give me piece of mind on what is going on inside the awesome Duramax Engine. I replaced the OEM fuel filter with the Nicktane filter adapter and placed a CAT 1R0750 2 micron High Efficiency filter on it. I replaced my fuel pre-filter setup (CAT 1R0749) with a Baldwin, also a 2 micron High Efficiency filter. The #2 Diesel should stay nice and clean with two (2) 2 micron filters in line! The FS2500 bypass filter was also changed (Oil Dialysis).

Notice in the pictures that the CAT 1R0749 filter did such a good job, that the OEM filter was hardly used. That OEM filter is 2 years old, last replaced in 2008. Also notice the Allison spin on filter. I used a filter magnet on the outside, and as you can see, the magnet trapped a lot of metal on the inside of the can. (No need to worry, as I did save the magnet inside the Allison! ;) ) If there was ever a doubt on using filter magnets, this is proof positive that they work, and work very well! I also used a filter mag on the stock oil filter. It also trapped some metal on the side of the can, just not as much.

I used filter mags on the OEM fuel filter but it really did not trap much.

The only thing I have left to do is grease the fittings. If I could only get my grease gun to work! :mad2:

Total Mileage 58151 as of 6-23-2010. Total mileage on the oil for this change is 13263.

Good deal!
My OEM filter looks like yours every time I cut it open also. That pre-filter does an excellent job. How do you like the filter adapter? I was considering one and going with the 1R0750 in both places so I only have to keep track of one filter size and type.

What's with the ramps BTW? ):h

That filter adapter is really nice! Top quality. You can't go wrong with the CAT filters. I think the fuel flows much better when you take out the plastic ball and spring out of the OEM filter head. I noticed a big difference.

If you are going to buy the CAT filters, I would go with the longer 1R0749 in back. Better for water/fuel separation in my opinion.

As for my ramps, I need them to get my belly underneath the truck! They are my Portuguese Lift! ;) :rof::rof::rof:

Do you usually have some gunk in the bottom of the housing of your aux filter? The WIX filters I've been running have a spring in the bottom (which I'm not crazy about)that rusts sitting in the water that collects there.

UOA Results

Great job Jeff. Can you post the UOA results when you get them back?

Yes I certainly will! It has been sent out last week.

I had very little with the CAT filter. Much less than what was in your photo.

Is there any reason (in particular) that you did not buy the 1 micron filter to put in the OEM location with the Nictane adapter? I would think 2 micron pre-filter + 1 micron primary would be the way to go, unless you've read/know something else about those 1 micron filters.

Thank you for sharing the pics, I do similar work on my truck but I don't take any pics.:mad2:

1 Micron filters are VERY VERY Expensive. I feel the 2 Micron filters are just as good. The stock filter I was using in the OEM location was only a 10 micron. I guess I am just cheap at this point. I may get the 1 Micron filters next time.

I like the filter head idea. I thought of buying one for mine.

Looks like a nice piece.

Can you take Out that Ball & Spring if you're still Using the OEM Filter, or can you only do it when you do the Conversion?

Just a little freer flowing with a little less restriction. Quicker pickup. I don't know, maybe it was just the new filters.

Hmmm...

When I Run Out of my Bulk Pack of Stock Fuel Filters, I think I'm gonna Convert it over to this Setup.

Just curious, why did you go with the Baldwin and not the Cat filter?
How tight does the new filter head stay? Does it come off when you change the filter? I saw it on Nicks web site and it looked like a good idea. Cat filters are inexpensive and I pass a Cat dealer on the way to work every day.

I bought 2 Baldwin filters a while back and had not used them, so I just want to use them up. I have 2 brand new CAT filters on my shelf just waiting until next year. I will also do a comparison between the CAT and Baldwin filters when I cut it open. I am using the smaller CAT up front on the new filter head.

The Baldwin filters look pretty stout, and I am not worried in the least about the filter since it is also a high efficiency 2 micron. With that being said, I have had great luck with the CAT filters and will only use the CAT filters in the future when I get rid of my older stock that I built up.

I do not think the filter head will come loose. I put it on tight enough to stay in place and without stripping the threads off! ;)

Good to know, I been trying to decide whether it is worth it or not to put on the filter head. I noticed that the Cat filters had more rubber gasket than the last time I purchased them, looks like will seal better. I buy 2 a year and swap out the Cat 2X and the OEM once.
If I put the filter head on the Cats are much more less expensive than the stock filter. Baldwin filters are very good, at one time I was buying oil filters by the case , but now since I get Mobil 1 TD on sale, it comes with 1 filter and 5 qts oil, so every oil change I end up with another filter.
I also bought the door for the fender liner to make it easier to change the fuel filter, but haven't installed it yet.

I can't figure out where your add-on filter is installed. I had one on my old truck with CAT filter head just forward of the fuel cooler. It was mounted to a bracket attached to the frame.
