Looking to do a Dana 60 swap into my Suburban while I have it in the garage for some engine work. I want the thing to have some get up and go to it. I normally pull either a 16' enclosed trailer or a car trailer and load it up with people on weekends for trips so I would still like some fuel economy. What would be the best gear choice for a 33" or a 35"? I was thinking 3.73 or 4.11.

I pull car trailers with mine a lot, it's pretty hilly here so i prefer the 4.11 rear on my dually. The '50s and '60s cars i tow are pretty heavy, especially compared to anything recent so i'm pulling about 8000 to 10000 lbs behind the old truck. (Now that's not towing heavy compared to other folks here) With the 4.11's i can pull that up just about any hill or smaller mountain and it won't break a sweat or even kickdown out of OD usually. Engine & EGT's even stay pretty good, ECT not over 200F & EGT's not over 1100F. I think that with a 3.73 my truck would struggle on the hills some. I also pulled my buddies 34' enclosed trailer (about 13000lbs loaded) and it pulled that pretty well too with the 4.11's. I get about 13 or 14mpg pulling those trailers, which i consider great compared to other trucks i've had for towing. :smile5:

I had a gasser with 35s with 4.10s, and it seemed just right. Never towed though just the rpms seemed where they should be. Both me and my wifes duallys have 4.10s and with 285/75's it dosnt seem to bad until about 70 it is winding out pretty good

I think 4.56's are perfect for guys running 35in tires. The 4.10's were perfect I think for stock tires.

If you're towing with a 6.5, then the max tire for 4.10's would be a 33 inch tall tire IMHO. I know my 6.5 with 30" tall tires had to work with 4.10's when I had it loaded down up a grade.

With correct mods the 3:73 will pull plenty strong, as in capable of 18K# with mine on factory 265 tires and you'll get better mpg when not towing vs 4:10s, if trailer is enclosed you may want the 4:10s though as it's not the weight, but the wind drag that will give you fits, if with a mostly stock setup
