I just read about ip timing causing these symptoms. the ? is i only have a chiltons manuel up to years 93. my truck is a 95 w/97 transplant. just bought the truck so a lot i dont know and wasnt told by the seller I am however am a good thinker. will my manuel give me the timing settings for my truck. thanks

just read my 93 manuel and it just covers manuel ip. where can i find instructions for retiming my 95 somthin

not sure on the computer. how would i know the difference from years on the computers. how much difference in programing?

IF no one can help you here you can try sixfiveturbodiesel.com and someone there should be able to help as I belong there and they have helped me a lot! There are a lot of smart people here and there that can help BUT you will be asked a lot of questions for them to help pinpoint the problem. Good luck!

The IP timing is done by turning the IP, but you should get a scanner to check what it is.

Please tell us everything you know about the truck, what model type, mileage, features, modifications, where is your PMD located, how old are injectors, fuel filter, is LP operating correctly? Are there any codes? Do you know how to check codes?

When you say a 97 transplant do you know if they just meant the cooling system update?

I doubt they would have changed the computer, but just to make sure you can remove the glove box liner, 4 screws, and then let me know the part number on it, or just the 4 letter EPROM code if it has one on the top right corner of PCM sticker. You shouldnt have to pull the PCM out to see it, but you can just pull it out, it isnt bolted down, just held tight by some clips on the front of the tray, so you can pull it towards the cab interior and it will come all the way out even without unplugging the harnesses.

With the 95 PCM you would have OBD-I, and can purchase a USB to OBD/ALDL cable to plug into a computer and see the timing, TDCO, and any sensor reading in the truck. There is a free software at Engh Motors, and you can purchase the cable from them too. Engh also sells a version of the software that also allows you to set the TDCO, which youll want to do after adjusting the IP for timing.

The TDCO is usually supposed to be about -.5, but can be advance to like -2.0 (edited, put period in wrong spot, my manual says can go up to -2.02, most people advance to -1.94) if other performance mods have been made.

The IP timing should be about 3.5* at idle, but you can get more performance by increasing the IP timing, mine is up to 8*, but idles much smoother at 4.5*. Performance EPROMs for the 94-95 in the PCM will advance the IP timing through programming. Then you can advance or retard it by loosening the IP and turning it. Towards the passenger side would be retarding it. And each mm is like 2*, so just tiny changes.

Your injectors might be bad, if the "knock" is coming from around there. If they leak while off then more fuel might be getting in oil.

buddy thats a mouth full. but by transplant i ment that previous owners said that they put a 97 engine, trans, tranfer. into this 95 truck. its a k3500 ext 4x4 dually. it would not start when i bought it. put a new starter and bat cable with 5 gal fuel. got it to start but had whitish blue smoke and a knock in the back 4 injectors ( listened w/scope) sounds like valve train or injector. knock is present at all rpm ranges just alittle louder. changed back four injectors, new glow plugs. now the oil fill blowby is a lot worse the cap dances with pressure. also hearing metal on metal with cap off. might be timming chain. I am looking to put a 6.2 in it for 500buck untill i read about ip timing. so hear i am will get some numbers off of the truck in the morning and get back with you. also when u put it in gear and try to go it doesent. but will rev in park.
thanks for the help

To help us figure out what is FUBAR fill out the diagnostic checklist

Based on what you've said so far the plastic buttons that hold the rocker arms in place may have gone bad.

Did you test the compression while you had the injectors out? With enough blow-by to make the oil-fill cap "dance", I would say there isamore serious problem than IP timing.

So it starts but doesnt move. The PO really did a number on it huh. You have quite a few issues, might need to put it in a list form all the things that dont work right and all the symptoms. The diagnostic troubleshooting checklist packratt said is a great place to start. A real project, but people on this site can help you with just about anything. Purchasing the GM manual might help you too. I got one from SSDS for $99, and its nice, but surprisingly doesnt go into detail about how to time the truck or install the IP, must be in a special manual. It has all the diagnostics though.

You must be throwing some codes, well, you would think, does the SES light work? It should be on when you turn IGN to ON. After we verify you still have the right PCM (which could screw up your tranny shifting if its not right), then you can check codes and verify diagnostics are working by shorting pin A & B on the OBD connector, and putting IGN to ON (never crank while pins shorted though), this will make the SES light blink all the codes it has stored. Code 12 should come out first to say its all working correctly.

Helm publishing sells new gm service manuals. They were about $120 for the full 95 set when i bought them 2 years ago.Worth every penny. You might find a set on e-gay or amazon.

ok this might be long so hang on sorry havent got check lists done yet working on it. pulled ecm out the serv # is 16183977 and the barcode # is 86BJAXM310448367. what year is this for?
the pcm is stock location w/ #3458304064 could not find ip # or see block# ip is set all the way to the passenger side. was playing with it and moved it back to where the lines match truck ran very rough no change with blow by or knock.
next i pulled codes w/ paperclip and got as follows
35 injection pulse width error (time short)
62 turbo boost sensor circuit low
91-98 cylinder balance fault.

whats next what do these mean?
when i bought the truck i was planning on a nother motor untill i started troubleshooting and thought i could save it now i am not sure witch road to take with this thing. wife is getting mad about how much a reman is now moneys gettin tight. so I have to be sure before I do somthing.
To all who are helping me thank you for your time. this site is a great resource for diesel owner thanks for being hear.

That is a 95 L65 F engine PCM, so its still original.

Where is the PMD located?

You should clear the codes and then run the truck again and see which come back. The 62 could just be from someone unplugging the boost sensor and running the truck. to clear put jumper in A&B, turn IGN ON, depress the brake and accelerator all the way for 15 seconds. Then before starting the truck, check that you only get code 12, and turn IGN OFF and remove jumper.

35 can be caused by cloudy fuel. Or a PMD circuit issue. Check that thered wire to the PMD, goes to PMD pin E, has 5.6V when you have the truck off but IGN ON, and when idling that wire should have 4.0V.

For the 62 if it comes back check at the boost sensor on the intake that there is 5V on the grey wire that goes to pin C when IGN is ON. Then check that there is 4V or more on the light green wire that goes to pin B with the IGN on.

All your cylinders were out of balance, probably your timing is terribly messed up. You need to get a scanner or that software to read the IP timing.
