Fuel Leak dripping down by starter

I came out of the store the other day and noticed a pretty good sized spot under my truck and it turned out to be diesel fuel. My Son tried to find the leak yesterday and said it was dripping down by the starter and that it leaked more when it was shut off. I'm gonna try to find the leak later today, is there any place that I am going to be more likely to find it since it is dripping down by the starter?
Thx,
Bob

one of several places all in the same area

check the filter assy fuel leaks are common from the various wiring connectors as they exit from the filter assy, the bottom gasket (not the one on top where the filter is), the 3 hoses from/to the filter assy fuel from the tank, fuel hose to the ip, and fuel hose to the fuel drain. you will need a 15mm socket to remove the fuel filter assy.

if it is a fuel hose to to napa they have diesel compatable hose not all autoparts stores have it.

looks like it may be the bottom gasket, i can see it dripping from somewhere toward the center at the bottom. is it a gasket or an oring? Do I have to get it at the dealer?

Dealer may have it, but may also have to go to a Stanadyne shop as the make the FM for GM, have a 2nd look, I've had a few leaks repaired by replacing the hose and more importantly the hose clamps.

Over time the spring clamps get weak and can no longer seal the heat hardened rubber hoses, I replaced all of mine with worm screw clamps & new rubber line.

Bob, have you changed your fuel filter lately? The o-ring sometimes is an issue.

More likely is degraded lines (stated above). If you find your lines need replacing, this is a good opportunity to run some better stuff... check out what Patrick has on his WalkingJ site - if you're replacing lines anyway, this would be a great time to 'feed the beast'.

no not lately. I got a pretty good look at it from the top and looks like it's dripping from about the center, I figured if it was coming from one of the hoses it would drip closer too the outside? Gonna go to town and may pick up one of those telescoping mirrors to see if I can see from underneath it to tell.

I've had many leaks from lines I've troubleshot and repaired with hoses/clamps, what I've found that unless one has disrupted the o-rings sealing the heater, or the WIF sensor the "set" in them will maintain the seal.

I just went through this yesterday on a FTB I was helping TmHark with, we needed to swap over his heater & WIF element/sensor to the modified housing, the bottom seal was flat and would no longer seal when we tried to reuse it.

Walking J has/can get those o-rings if the clamp/hose replacement is not the issue

See blue hi-lite answers above, I wanted to keep this all in one place hence why the other thread asking where to buy went away, it will help later in searches, & is only reason I deleted the other one Bob

When I did my FTB mod I replaced all the o-rings with nitril ones I got at a good year supplier. Cost me less than 2 bucks for all the o-rings.

Thanks for the clarification Tim. I'm gonna do a deeper dive this morning.

Not sure if it means anything but I have been getting a dim WIF light first thing when I start it up and it goes off fairly quickly. Probably just means the bowl has been drained to the point there is air in there.

I tightened all of the clamps they were all worm clamps. and started it and no leaks. I had the fuel manager unbolted and just tilted it toward the passenger side and it started dripping from underneath. I do'n believe it was coming from any of the lines. I believe it is coming out where the wires come out of the WIF sensor, is that possible?

Yes that is possible, especially since you are seeing WIF indications, which may be shorting and causing your dim WIF indications you report above, I'd get a new WIF sensor and o-rings if you just want to cut to the chase.

Or you could remove the FM & all plug ports except 1 and pressurize with 15 PSI air, then put a soap/water solution on all fittings and know exactly where the leak is coming from as it bubbles where the leak might be.

Sorry guys I was calling it the WIF sensor but I believe it was the fuel heater, it is the bottom part that is held on with a plastic ring like at the top for the fuel filter. After my Son and TD recommending doing the pressure test I did it and I found out it was leaking around the seal under that plastic ring. I went to Orielly's and found one that didn't look that close but I put it together with it and did the pressure test again and it was holding so I put it back together. I also replaced the 3/8 rubber feed line and the 1/4 rubber lines from the fuel manager to the pump and the water valve. Napa said the line was rated for Diesel so that's what I went with. I believe the WIF light I have been getting was because of air in the system after it sitting and leaking down. Thanks for the help guys.

same place mine was leaking before i developed a hole in the aluminum from po's lack of maintance in removing the water.
