i have a 2004 GMC Sierra 4 door duramax. the fuel gage stays way past the full mark even when it's almost empty. when you fill it up it goes al the way round to the "E" on empty, then kind of works it's way down towards the full mark. I've been keepnig my personal trip feature on so that when i get near 400 miles i know it's time to fuel up for sure. i was told that the gage is tied into the fuel pump? is that true or is it just a simple fix. thanks; Big Daddy

I would guess it is a bad sending unit. On gas trucks, the fuel pump is part of the sending unit and very expensive. There is no pump in the tank on the diesels.

Sounds like you've got a cluster problem, since the guage still moves, its just in the wrong part of the sweep.
