In for the long haul
A little over a year ago I bought/ordered a new FSD. The old one is remotely mounted on a heat sink, on my home made mount, behind the license plate holder in the front bumper. I had simply moved it, heat sink and all, from the intake several years ago. It wasn't really giving me any trouble, but thought I would install the new one and keep the old for a spare. Well, when I went to install it yesterday I broke two of the little 6-32 machine screws as they were rusted solid into the heat sink. One I was able to "worry" out and one I had to drill out.
That went OK, but do you think I could find replacement screws???? Went to the GM dealer, and they said they only come with a new PMD for $594.00 NOT! Went to a couple of local auto shops and they couldn't help either. I'm sure I could have got them at one of the fastener type stores, but it was late in the afternoon (approaching rush hour) and they would have been closed, if they weren't already. Then the guy at the local NAPA shop told me where I could get them. At the remote control hobby store! And indeed they had exactly what I needed. Spent an hour and a half running around the city, but finally got exactly what I needed for $1.79.
Not too bad, but when I got home and opened the box with the new FSD, what did I find, but 4 nice new screws that came with the kit. DOH!! :mad2: Oh well.... I'm embarrassed...
Moral of the story: Look in the new box first, but failing that, one can get these 1 1/4" 6-32 machine screws, and quite a bit more, at a remote control hobby store. Who would have thought it? They did have the thermal heat sink paste as well, which I got. So the trip wasn't a total waste of time. I actually went back to the NAPA store and thanked the guy.
